As a vessel is known by the sound, whether it be cracked or not, so men are proved by their speeches whether they be wise or foolish. Demosthenes

People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within. Elizabeth Kübler-Ross

There is nothing fiercer than a failed artist. The energy remains, but, having no outlet, it implodes in a great black fart of rage which smokes up all the inner windows of the soul. Erica Jong

Beautiful light is born of darkness, so the faith that springs from conflict is often the strongest and the best. R. Turnbull

There is a crack, a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in. Leonard Cohen

The new Moon in Capricorn occurs on 23rd December, and, as we might expect it is a mixed bag of messages as this is a rather strange and unsure time in our lives on many levels. The Sabian Symbol for this new Moon has a message that can elicit harm, worry and a sense ‘damage’ – it’s Capricorn 2: THREE STAINED-GLASS WINDOWS IN A GOTHIC CHURCH, ONE DAMAGED BY WAR. It’s interesting to note that this ‘stained-glass windows’ Symbol was the degree of Mars on 9/11. It’s also noteworthy in light of the ‘three’ that St. Paul’s Cathedral, which is a Trinity Church, is right next to where the towers were, and, with all that destruction and mayhem, not one window – stained glass or otherwise –  was blown out. I heard about this when visiting the site some two years later, *not one window* blew out. And Mars here on the ‘windows’ Symbol and the planes flying into the windows of the WTC (which many remarked was like a ‘cathedral to capitalism’).

[BTW,  immediately as I finished writing this, I got an SMS that the rather rattlely and cracked windows in my cottage – built in 1943 smack in the throes and difficult economic times of WW11 – are going to be replaced in January). I love how these Symbols ‘work’.]

We hear talk of The Fourth Industrial Revolution, the World Economic Forum, brain and hand chips (yes, they’re coming with the brain chip being Elon Musk’s venture) – still trusting him? Still thinking that this is merely a ‘conspiracy theory’? Look up Neurolink. Klaus Schwab (who is definitely not Santa Clause – pun intended) assures us that ‘within ten years’ we will ALL have chips in our brains – the chips in our hands happening long before that. Meanwhile, most of the world’s corporations and governments have signed up to be part of the WEF. We hear talk of UBI’s – Universal Basic Incomes that we will all be on as Artifical Intelligence starts taking over our jobs (and cash disappears entirely – I’ve been yelled at for suggesting that’s coming but now guess what?) Crypto crashing, threats of bank buy-ins, etc. Oh yeah, and food shortages, world hunger, climate change catastrophes, etc. Sheesh. And here we go into a new year that numerologically adds up to a seven.

Seven is not always the easiest of years as there can be confusion and chaos that can be hard to see through. I sense that we need a strong sense of faith (perhaps renewed) and a hope that all will be well, although hoping for the cavalry to come in at the last moment may be a bit too rose-coloured-glasses. BTW, the World Economic Forum has a new logo which is a stylised swastika (just facts, I’m not making this up – they did!). The Fourth Reich anyone?

The curious thing that I’ve long noticed is that the Sabian Symbols for December 23, 24, 25 and 26 fit exactly with the notion of Christmas. Remembering that the Symbols came through in a double blind experiment in Balboa Park in San Diego in 1925, it is rather mind blowing to see that there are many dates that have Symbols that resonate to the story of that date. To explain: Right on Christmas, often smack on December 25 (but that can change a little with leap years and where you are on the planet), which is said to be about the birth of Jesus Christ, the Symbol for Capricorn 3 is very much about ‘incarnation of the spirit’.

The festive season degrees:

Capricorn 2: THREE STAINED-GLASS WINDOWS IN A GOTHIC CHURCH, ONE DAMAGED BY WAR – this speaks to me of the story of the betrayal of Jesus.

Capricorn 3: THE HUMAN SOUL, IN ITS EAGERNESS FOR NEW EXPERIENCES, SEEKS EMBODIMENT – this Symbol is about incarnation, and, Christmas is said to be about celebrating the birth of Christ.

I am quick to point out that we’re not all Christians – this is also time of renewal and rebirth in many ways as we go into the new year. I speak about this (obviously) from a symbolic level – as a parable.

So, we would do well to remember to ‘heal’ those things that have cracks (not all ‘cracks’ are bad, just those that we assess to be, some cracks let the light in). And, to remember to follow those dreams about what we want to ‘incarnate’ into the world – what talents, what creative urges, what ideas, what paths, etc, do we want to follow?). I find Capricorn 3 to be an immensely creative and wonderful Symbol and always notice it when it’s around.

With Jupiter in Aries squaring the new Moon exactly, I sense that many of us will be more'The Mermaid' by Howard Pyle and more determined to ‘give birth to ourselves’. We are being challenged to show our talents, skills, art, etc, and true sense of being to the world – or, at least, to ourselves so we might share to others. Jupiter is on Aries 1: A WOMAN HAS RISEN OUT OF THE OCEAN, A SEAL IS EMBRACING HER. Again with the mystery and magic of the Sabian Symbols, how Aries 1, emerging out of the oceanic realm of Pisces, is so archetypally spot on is amazing. With Jupiter now completely emerging from Pisces, we are being asked to move more and more into our divine sense of individuation – to ‘manifest ourselves’ more authentically.

Further to this ’emergence’, although it is retrograde, we do have Mars on Gemini 11: NEWLY OPENED LANDS OFFER THE PIONEER NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXPERIENCE – we can feel this strong drive to go into new experiences, new territories, but it may not yet be quite the right time. That resolution might come later in January when Mars has some things moving forwards again.

Speaking of resolutions: On January 1st, we have Venus and Pluto conjunct on Capricorn 28: A LARGE AVIARY. This can be great for cementing in resolutions at the new year but we might do well to be discerning about which of our ‘voices’ we listen to. After all, the ‘large aviary’ has lots of chatter and not all of it is useful. It’s interesting to note that with Pluto transiting A LARGE AVIARY, Elon Musk bought Twitter. For clarity, I see Capricorn 28 as being about the Internet and social media, et al, but Twitter is almost verbatim A LARGE AVIARY. :) With Pluto transiting this degree, I expect that we’ll some rather astounding and big issues/changes/etc to the Internet.

I want to take this opportunity to wish all my readers (and family and friends) the happiest Festive Season and a fabulous New Year. As we go into 2023 we will do well to remember that we’re embarking on a new journey in many many ways (not just because the calendar is changing).

There’s much more to say about this – there always is.

The following are my interpretations of the Sabian Symbols for the planetary positions at the time of this full Moon. The shorter interps are my text that are included with Solar Fire software.

The Sabian Symbol for December’s new Moon is Capricorn 2: THREE STAINED-GLASS WINDOWS IN A GOTHIC CHURCH, ONE DAMAGED BY WAR. The following is my full interpretation from my book The Sabian Oracle: 360 Degrees of Wisdom:

Commentary: ‘Three Stained-Glass Windows in a Gothic Church, One Damaged by War’ pictures the need to stay strong on every level under the barrage of some type of bombardment. A ‘Church’ is normally a place of safety and refuge, but ‘War’ has broken through its divine barrier and caused ‘Damage’, or some injury, that is much bigger than just a broken ‘Window’. One of the three corners of unity, in this case the one of love, is ‘Damaged’ and compromised by the aggressive warring nature of mankind.

Oracle: With the shattering of the ‘Window’, there is often a loss of faith, hope and trust. Someone may have previously felt safe in the confines of their life and suddenly a “bomb hits”, breaking and demolishing some aspect of their usually safe and secure life. This situation may take considerable time to heal, although if the structure is sound, fixing the ‘Window’ (the place where the light gets in) can be done relatively quickly. Still, even with the best of thoughts, emotions and intentions, it might take months or years to truly heal the devastating effect that’s been unleashed. In fact, the actual ‘Damage’ that this Symbol implies may have started long ago. There is a need to get it repaired and things often need healing on the emotional and physical levels. Hypnotherapy, psychoanalysis and past life regression may reveal pain, injury and trauma that are holding one back from being able to accept or give love. Acceptance of love can lead to healing on many levels. Love is often the main issue that needs to be projected outwards as well as accepted inwards.

Keywords: Seeking sanctuary. Careless aggression where love should be. Religious or philosophical differences that spark off problems. Fears of being “under attack” whilst in the spotlight. Sorrow and despair over losses. Loss of faith. ‘Windows’ that are cracked, broken or smashed. Cracks and shattering. Rescue of endangered holy places. Loss of love through harsh circumstance. The need for repair.

The Caution: Feeling disconnected from the reality of what’s going on. Fearfulness OR fearlessness, when one should be careful. Signs of rubble all around. Aggression between people. Burning down churches. A lack of safe places. Being shell-shocked and ravaged. Cold breezes entering sacred spaces. Psychological and emotional scars. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.

The Karmic Condition (the degree before) of this new Moon is Capricorn 1: AN INDIAN CHIEF CLAIMS RECOGNITION AND POWER FROM THE ASSEMBLED TRIBE

This Symbol shows the necessity or the ability to be strong, stand tall, be in charge and command respect. There are leadership issues that need to be embraced or addressed. Sometimes we need to rise to the occasion and take charge and this may lead to a struggle for control; you may have to remind those around you that you can be trusted to make decisions or lead others. At times in your life, those above you may remind you of your lesser position in the scheme of things. This can happen if others are jealous of your achievements and power. Always know when to give way to the rights of others.

Keywords: Assuming authority and the need for it. Benevolence bestowed. Winning by charisma and strength of numbers. Finding a true sense of place. Signs that one should be in charge. Staking one’s claim. The ‘Claim of Recognition’. Respect. Having to stand up or stand out in the crowd. Having the charisma of leadership. Consolidating power. Popularity contests.

The Caution: Power tripping and struggles. Over-inflated views of one’s self. The continual need to quieten power battles. Being challenged by those left and right. Demanding attention and that others follow orders. Taking over. Selfish and ego-driven. Too many chiefs.

The Quest Degree (the degree following) of this new Moon is Capricorn 3: THE HUMAN SOUL, IN ITS EAGERNESS FOR NEW EXPERIENCES, SEEKS EMBODIMENT

This Symbol shows the need, or the ability, to be open and receptive to the messages of the world around you, following which there is an expansion into a new understanding and a new way of life. Writing is an excellent way for the “Soul” to “Seek Embodiment”. Also there can be issues to do with one’s body. There can be many times of quiet; of inner contemplation and outer observance. Regardless of your more immediate, physical circumstances, there is an evolution of understanding going on with this degree. Unbounded enthusiasm is likely to be around. It may be useful to keep a diary or to write things down. Extraordinary events can happen with this degree.

Keywords: Inner motivation leading to expansion. Jesus and his disciples. Being “born” quickly. Manifesting one’s desires without concern for consequences. Being “born again”. Feeling like a changed person. The need to drop into the body. Religious and spiritual rebirth. Reincarnation. The urge to create. Writers and writing.

The Caution: Denying the growth that’s beckoning in favor of social responsibility. Not leaving when perhaps one should. Having to seek permission to come through any “new gateway”. A loss of faith. Being obsessed about an ideal or idea. Feeling cast adrift from one’s reality.

The Sabian Symbol of Mercury is Capricorn 22: A GENERAL ACCEPTING DEFEAT GRACEFULLY

This Symbol shows the ability, or the need, to be able to see where and when to “Accept” that things are not working and letting go of events or people or thoughts that no longer work for you. There’s times when we realize there is no longer any point in fighting and to ‘win’ in some situations may be impossible. At the time of surrender, it is the valor of the battle and the way you handled yourself and others that will be remembered. You may find yourself at this point during your life and it is how gracefully you handle defeat that will be the measure of your worth. You will go onto other endeavors and win. You don’t always have to “Accept Defeat”: sometimes you have to accept your own successes.

Keywords: True inner worth. Being a “good loser”. Learning that every minor skirmish in life is not a major ‘Defeat’. Being prepared to start again. Sacrificing things for the benefit of others. Nobility of character. Letting go of the “charge” around anger. Surrendering. Knowing when to let go.

The Caution: Being a “bad loser”. Feeling everything is going to come out badly. Reliance on self-limitations. Seeing the negative in everything. Losing what’s been worked for. Making excuses to get out of tight situations. Betrayal and loss. Loss of support. Surrendering too early. Giving up on life.

The Sabian Symbol of Venus is Capricorn 17: A YOUNG PERSON SURREPTITIOUSLY BATHING IN THE NUDE

This Symbol shows the ability, or the need, to get rid of the restraints that have been imposed by social conditioning and inhibitions; to strip down to bare essentials and not be ashamed of it. The “Young Person” in this degree is enjoying the feeling of not having clothes nor costume to constrain or cover them. They are also letting the sun and the air contact their skin which is very healthy and revivifying. Although there may be some feelings of being ‘exposed’, really letting go and not worrying about being ‘seen’ can lead to feelings of freedom. This applies to a freeing up or exposing on a spiritual and emotional level as well, it’s not just confined to physical realities.

Keywords: Confrontations with one’s self. Reconnecting with nature. A desire to “reveal” oneself mentally, physically or emotionally. Issues with weight. The manipulation of the female form in the media. Exhibitionism. Learning to let go of extraneous things. Confronting puritanism. Being at one with the environment. Releasing inhibitions. Stripping. Streaking. Sun lotions.

The Caution: Suppression of natural attitudes. Bondage to social inhibitions. Feeling “indecent” about one’s bodily responses. Hiding one’s self away OR being an exhibitionist. Showing off with no concern for other’s feelings. Shocking and surprising behavior.

The Sabian Symbol of retrograde Mars is Gemini 11: NEWLY OPENED LANDS OFFER THE PIONEER NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXPERIENCE

This Symbol shows that there’s a need to break away from old familiar ground and move out into unknown territory. Fear is the greatest barrier to moving forward, but the familiar must be left behind for new possibilities. Taking opportunities to move on to new realms of being can lead to a whole new experience or indeed a whole new life. You have to be prepared to leave the old behind and to step out into new experiences with an open heart and an open mind. You could be starting from scratch with little to support you, but you could find depths of experience you never thought possible.

Keywords: Pioneering attitudes bringing rewards. Going off the beaten track. Coming up with new ideas. New spiritual realizations opening up vistas of hope and experiences. Opportunities to move on to new realms. Adjusting to new places. The Promised Lands. Being prepared to take risks. Moving out. New time zones. Foreign customs and languages.

The Caution: Clinging to the old and familiar when it is outworn and boring. Restricting growth and change. Not moving on. Invading other people’s space. Claiming what’s rightfully someone else’s. Hanging on when it’s time to let go. Running off to avoid involvement or responsibilities.

The Sabian Symbol of Jupiter is Aries 1: A WOMAN HAS RISEN OUT OF THE OCEAN, A SEAL IS EMBRACING HER

'The Mermaid' by Howard PyleThis degree is the beginning of the zodiac where the old gets left behind. New understanding and awareness is coming to light. Something new is emerging and it needs to be welcomed and nurtured. This is the beginning of a whole new impulse, creative and responsive. There’s an emergence of a whole new potentiality. Resist looking back to outgrown and unsatisfactory conditions in your life as they can pull you back to old and unrewarding ways of being. This is also about finding your voice and your feet. It’s about conscious individuation and the need to forge into new worlds with a new way of being.

Keywords: Cycles starting. Beginnings. Emergence into concrete manifestation. Embracing and honoring the shadow. Recognizing our animal side. Tropical islands or lands. Rocky shores. Seals. Oceans and water. Shedding skins. Transmutation. The Selkie myth. Grounding one’s energy. Stepping between the sea and the shore. Androgyny. Love and its embrace. Finding your feet and your voice. Mermaids.

The Caution: Using masculine power to overshadow emotions. Refusing to move on. Feeling held back by fears and old life patterns. Falling back into previous, unsatisfactory conditions. Dragging others backwards. Immobilizing fear of the unknown. Being just another “fish in the sea”.

The Sabian Symbol of Saturn is Aquarius 22: A RUG PLACED ON A FLOOR FOR CHILDREN TO PLAY ON

This Symbol shows the ability, or the need, to be able to rest in the knowledge that you are supported, have a place to live, grow, thrive, play and to be safe. The “Rug” may be a small area that you’re assigned in life for your activities, or it may be a very large patch of area. Whatever it is, you will not want to have the ‘rug pulled from under your feet’; you’ll want to be assured that you have a home and security. At times, you may feel that you, or someone else, are struggling as you seek to grow and develop. Even if you are not aware of it, there are cushions, safeguards and protection all around you. There is a need for somewhere safe to live and prosper. Perhaps you need to provide this for others or have others provide it for you?

Keywords: Comfort and care provided. The caring and longing for children. Having a place of belonging. A sense of security. Rugs, carpets, cribs and cots. Defining areas of possible activity. Being aware of the needs of the young. Adoption. Sleeping on the floor or the sofa. Fun, joy, toys. Playing with others. Nurseries. Day care. Cribs. Play pens.

The Caution: Being overprotected. Not growing up. Insulation from reality. Self-indulgence. Limits of activity. Having the rug pulled. Expecting to be looked after vs. self-reliance. Assuming the young and inexperienced can look after themselves. Lines that shouldn’t be crossed. Territorial attitudes. Always having to watch the young ones. Inability to relax. Infertility.

The Sabian Symbol for retrograde Uranus is Taurus 16: AN OLD PERSON IS ATTEMPTING, WITH A DEGREE OF SUCCESS UNSUSPECTED BY THEM, TO REVEAL THE MYSTERIES TO A MOTLEY GROUP

This Symbol implies that one holds an understanding that is either ahead of the times or behind the times. Regardless of which it is, you may feel that no-one is paying attention to your advice or wisdom, but it is not your wisdom that is at fault, it may be your approach coupled with a lack of awareness of the listeners. Perhaps those you are trying to reach are not ready yet for the information or they instinctively already know it. However, often people are soaking up things without really showing how much they are ‘getting it’. Sometimes you teach better by example than by trying to persuade.

Keywords: The need to try a new approach. Challenging the status quo. Astrodrama. Being way ahead of one’s time. Getting one’s message across in an innovative and creative way. A teacher uniting diverse people in a common cause. Generation gaps. Wisdom given with expectation. Ideas bringing people together.

The Caution: Exaggerated opinion of one’s understanding of the situation. The mistaken belief that others need to know something. Not being in touch with the “times”. Feeling outdated. Preaching old, possibly outworn ideas. Insecure feelings based on conservative expectations of others.

The Sabian Symbol of Neptune is Pisces 23: A ‘MATERIALIZING MEDIUM’ GIVING A SÉANCE

This Symbol shows the ability, or the need, to be able to pick up subtle energies and psychic clues in the environment. The “Materializing Medium” can receive radiations, frequencies or vibrations that cannot easily be sensed by most people. At times in your life, you will experience a surprising sensitivity and awareness to spiritual forces and energies. This can cause confusion, other times enlightenment. Sit with any new impressions you receive until you understand their authenticity or depth. Sometimes there is a need to free up ‘stuck’ or earthbound entities. This degree can also show someone who can “Materialize” things; they can make things happen just by thinking about or concentrating on them.

Keywords: Spiritual channeling. A need to free up “stuck” or earthbound entities. Efforts to materialize things. Coming straight out with things. Giving voice to spirit. Tarot readings, clairvoyance and clairsentience. Things seen ahead of their time. Bringing messages from the other side. Contacting the dead.

The Caution: Putting on a false front. Merely doing a performance for others. Making things up. Using mind control over others to get a desired outcome. Using sensational methods to induce others to give up control over their own lives. Exorcisms performed by the inexperienced. Inviting weird energies or people.

The Sabian Symbol of Pluto is Capricorn 28: A LARGE AVIARY

This Symbol shows the ability, or the need, to be able to take in a lot of information, to be social, yet have some time alone. The “Large Aviary” has a lot of citizens, all buzzing around, all interacting and full of life. There is a lot of chattering and flitting from one thing to another going on and while there is no harm being done, perhaps, sometimes, there’s nothing much really being achieved. Is this because there is a level of mental confusion happening? At the least there is likely to be a feeling of brotherhood and not being alone. Finding time alone can be difficult.

Keywords: Clairaudience. Hearing many inner voices. Having a huge entourage or crowd. Tinnitus. Enormous activity. Many people living their individual lives in one space. Blocks of flats and units. Housing estates. Birds, aviaries, bird seed. Perches. People chattering. Girls sharing. Lots to say. Little true content. Confined living spaces. Communicating solely with those in the immediate environment. Living in a world of one’s own with no thought of the realities of how other people live. Having to get along with others. Caged birds. Twitter.

The Caution: Mental confusion bringing a lack of discernment. Too much chatter with not much being achieved. False sense of freedom. Chattering more than doing. Finding it hard to find peace, harmony or privacy. Lonely existences. Abandoned living spaces. Dependence on external sources of nourishment or other provisions.

The Sabian Symbol of stationary direct Chiron is Aries 12: A FLOCK OF WILD GEESE

Take your cue from the wild geese. When they fly in formation, they take turns in leading the way; when one gets tired or sick, another takes the lead. Spread your wings and seek freedom, taking note of ‘seasonal’ variations around you. Just remember to be mindful of your responsibilities to both yourself and others. Be a part of the group by contributing and promoting the joys of togetherness while keeping a sense of independence.

Keywords: Aquarian ideals of brotherhood. Attunement to planetary rhythms. Spirit liberated from matter. Wanting to take off by one’s self, but not being able to. Focused group activity and support. Group mentality, action and agreement. Intuition and telepathy. Choreography. Camaraderie. “Honking” to egg each other on. Flying in the slipstream. Responses to seasonal changes. Migrating at the right times. Travelling. Herds, gangs. broods. Flying in formation.

The Caution: Following the leader without knowing where one’s going. Never knowing where to land, or where to ground oneself. Wild goose chases. Not recognizing the brotherhood in humanity. Losing a sense of individual identity. Going off in the wrong direction. Being lost in the crowd. Being one of a gaggle.

The Sabian Symbol of the Moon’s north node is Taurus 13: A PORTER CARRYING A MOUNTAIN OF HEAVY BAGGAGE

This Symbol implies someone who tends to carry the load for others. They often feel responsible for everyone and everything. The ‘porter’ will usually spring to attention when asked to help or to shoulder the burden of others luggage or baggage. In fact, you may be doing a lot to help others, but not getting much appreciation or thanks. Be wary that you are not just helping people to hang on to their extra ‘baggage’, through your desire to be useful and helpful. This can weigh them down when you are no longer available. Grinning and bearing the weight only works for so long before one tires of it.

Keywords: Self-reliance. Owning other people’s ‘garbage’. Shouldering baggage or weight. Being weighed-down. Feeling responsible for everything. Bad backs and posture. Carrying others. Counseling people, taking on their emotions. Bad backs, shoulders, knees, etc. Strain and wear. Bearing the family guilt. Luggage. Trolleys. Looking for tips.

The Caution: Being busy with other peoples’ problems. Unable to work for your own benefit. Carrying other peoples’ responsibilities. Being indispensable until the energy is all worn out. Not knowing when to say “no” to other’s demands. The burden of debts. Being useful but unimportant.

The Sabian Symbol for the Moon’s south node is Scorpio 13: AN INVENTOR PERFORMS A LABORATORY EXPERIMENT

This Symbol shows the ability, or the necessity, of being able to take risks or to be an explorer or someone who does things rather differently than most people. It’s your job to look for creative solutions and work with them. When things are just not working, you probably need to try different combinations and different possibilities in order to have the desired result. Being willing to go out on a limb can result in all kinds of unexpected results, some wonderfully rewarding, but some, if not well enough considered, could end up blowing up in your face. By persevering, you will not only find solution to complex situations, but also learn a lot from any errors you make along the way.

Keywords: Creating one’s vision. Thinking quickly and making momentary decisions. Being prepared to risk failure. Bringing different mixes of things and/or people together. Taking calculated risks to see what will happen. Seeing if things live up to expectations. Looking for answers. The “mad professor”. Mixing chemicals. Measuring and weighing. Going by one’s gut reactions. Inventions and experiments. Discovery. Laboratories. Research.

The Caution: Becoming obscured by pointless goals. Making things up. Being one-eyed and focused to the exclusion of all else. Not fully understanding the consequences of actions. Always taking risks. Not taking adequate cautions. Not keeping track of what you’re doing. Ignoring warning signs. Being a “mad professor”.
