The Fruits Of One’s Labor: July’s New Moon In Cancer 2024
Appetite comes with eating; the more one has, the more one would have. French proverb
One weakness of our age is our apparent inability to distinguish our needs from our greeds. Don Robinson
A fool bolts pleasure, then complains of moral indigestion. Minna Thomas Antrim
Life is short. Live it up. Nikita Khrushchev
I saw few die of hunger; of eating, a hundred thousand. Benjamin Franklin
Never eat anything at one sitting that you can’t lift. Miss Piggy, Muppet character
Some people wanted champagne and caviar when they should have had beer and hot dogs. Dwight D. Eisenhower (it’s alright for some!)
July’s new Moon occurs on July 5th in the U.S. and July 6th in Australia. Being a Cancerian new Moon, the issues are around safety, security, home, a sense of being nurtured and nourished and enjoying the products of one’s culture, indeed, of one’s nation, particularly as this new Moon occurs one degree away from the U.S. Sun. In other words, this feels huge, particularly, for them.
It’s interesting to note how many countries are having elections right now (in the next few days), including the United Kingdom and France, and, of course, the upcoming U.S. election is very much on the radar now as well. It’s going to be interesting to see what emerges out of this time as the issues of stability and calm and having enough to survive on (let alone comfortably for many) are not at all assured. We, of course, as always, see that the elites and the corporations are holding the reins, and, more power has just been handed to them through the U.S. Supreme Court in the last few days, overruling the Chevon Doctrine, giving way more power to way more people than is comfortable. (For clarity: I’m Australian, I try not to focus on the U.S., however, most of my newsletter subcribers are American, and, what’s going on there is really something and effects the entire world).
It’s also interesting to note that the Moon’s north node is now on Aries 11: THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC, OR THE RULER OF ONE’S COUNTRY and, the Moon’s south node at Libra 11: A PROFESSOR PEERING OVER HIS GLASSES AT HIS STUDENTS – do people really ‘see’ what’s going on? This Symbol speaks of being able to see others for who/what/how they really are – removing ‘the lens’ that may obstruct the true picture of the person being observed. We use a different lens to actually look at people rather than using our ‘reading glasses’ of who and what they could be or should be ‘according to the rules’. I’m finding this fascinating considering the fact that, just about everywhere I look, people are dissatisfied with their political leaders – and people often wish that other people would view their favourite ‘candidate’ in the same way (they can be political, in the entertainment industry, whatever, whoever). If there was an election now in Australia, I wouldn’t be able to vote for either party. I have a feeling it’s endemic.
The Sabian Symbol for the new Moon is Cancer 15: A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE OVEREATEN AND ENJOYED IT. The following is from my book The Sabian Oracle: 360 Degrees of Wisdom.
Commentary: ‘A Group of People Who Have Overeaten and Enjoyed It’ is an image of people consuming to their fill and having a good time of it. It seems they had a big appetite and have over indulged themselves, and are now feeling satisfied. They have taken take time out to satisfy their hunger and ‘Enjoy’ the leisure of catching up with what’s going on with others. There is a certain measure of pleasure and satisfaction, but it is probably only temporary, and they may need to return to work. This can be difficult, as overeating can lead to dulled senses and an inability to make intelligent decisions. People become energetically bound up in digesting what they’ve “consumed”, while the body is preoccupied with handling the load. This can make the mind and body slow and, sometimes, lazy. This Symbol can picture enjoying “consuming” anything, not only “eating.” They probably enjoy many of the good things in life.
Oracle: It may be that you, or someone else, have overindulged in material objects or success. For now, enjoy your good fortune. Beware, however, as sometimes “feeding frenzies” can turn into issues that need to be sorted out later. Problems can be experienced through overspending, overeating, putting on weight, etc. Constantly overeating or overspending in an attempt to feel better can lead to issues of self-worth, greed and debt. There is possibly a need to curb this indulging. Realize when it’s time to return to work, and to be productive instead of just swallowing, or “consuming” more and more. In fact, there may be a need for “tightening the belt”. Commodities, like food, etc., may run short now due to extravagance or excess. We remember to say Grace in thanks for the good fortune we have.
Keywords: Consumerism. Communal cohesion through indulging in the senses. Satisfied hunger. Commercialism and longing to own things. Eating disorders. The right of everyone to enjoy food and nourishment. Big business. Success. Enjoying “the good life”. Having plenty. Abundance. Temporary fulfillment.
The Caution: Self-indulgence through the senses. The “haves” and the “have-nots”. People going without so that others can have more. Monopolization. Bloating. Feeling that one deserves everything on a platter. Overweight. Bad nourishment. Eating binges. Indigestion. Obsession with ownership. Deprivation. Exploiting resources. Overspending. Gluttony.
The Karmic Condition of this new Moon is Cancer 14: A VERY OLD MAN FACING A VAST DARK SPACE TO THE NORTHEAST – I’m including this full interpretation from my book as this is the Sun degree of the U.S.
Commentary: ‘A Very Old Man’ is ‘Facing a Vast Dark Space to the Northeast’. He may be feeling old, lost and in need of guidance. Washington DC, the capital of America, from the majority of the country is in the ‘Northeast’. This is the Symbol of America’s Sun sign, the 4th July. It speaks of looking towards that place. This is also the degree of the fixed star Sirius, the star many have looked to for spiritual direction. The ‘Vast Dark Space’ may feel like alien or foreign territory. The ‘Very Old Man’ looks to the ‘Northeast’ for guidance; perhaps he is looking at the vastness or a particular star or merely “staring into a void”. Can he find salvation there? answers?—or does he feel lost and deserted? People overwhelmed by “big brother”, commercialism and the battle to “keep up” can feel ‘Old’ in some way. However, direction may be found in this ‘Vast Dark Space’.
Oracle: Guidance may be needed, but it can be hard to come by; faith may be the only light to guide you through. As we grow and age, we can choose to become more enlightened, with a greater ability to see spiritual truth. However, you could be feeling that even faith is difficult to keep hold of at the moment. You may feel let down by people—friends, family, or lovers, right through to authorities or the government. There needs to be both trust and courage that one’s inner wisdom is in touch with some higher truth. We need this especially when we don’t know where we’re going and feel like we have to take things one day at a time. Once we have completed our journey in this life, there is still the mystery of the next life. Venturing into the unknown when you think you have seen it all can be a reminder of the thrill of life. Take some time to look to to the sky at night; this may bring encouragement and some kind of realization or fulfillment.
Keywords: American Indians and other native peoples that have been left in the dark. Losing faith in the future. The dying out of cultures or languages. Washington DC. Staring into a void. Blindness. Searching for answers. Sirius—the Dog Star. Magnetic shifts. Compass directions. Stargazing. Navigation. Faith. The earth’s poles. Astronomy. Vast dark arenas. Wisdom that comes with age. Feeling old before one’s time. Seeking purpose and direction.
The Caution: Seeing nothing. A lack of purpose. Abandonment, rejection, loss and darkness. The exploitation and abandonment of native people. Myopia. Voids. Emptiness.
The Quest Degree of this new Moon is Cancer 16: A MAN STUDYING A MANDALA IN FRONT OF THEM, WITH THE HELP OF A VERY ANCIENT BOOK
This Symbol shows being able to make sense out of complex systems and to be able to apply them in everyday life. However, we may still be puzzled by the deeper meanings of our situation. The key is often found in old knowledge and wisdom or systems of understanding like architecture and astrology. Perhaps you feel ‘boxed in’ by situations and need to be able to strategize your way out. You must seek what is already known in order to understand. Knowledge is available to you. Studying ‘the secret mysteries’ can reveal answers to life’s questions.
Keywords: Concentration. Overcoming obstacles by gaining control of one’s inner and outer life. Architecture and strategic planning. Lessons to be learnt from history. Astrology, numerology, tarot. Systems of thought that are laid out. Maps. The rules of warfare—anything with a strategy. Drawing strength and inspiration from squares and circles. Inward attention. Mandalas.
The Caution: Ignoring the old wisdom for modern rational systems. Lack of imagination. Going into a situation unorganized and unplanned. Trying to gain the better of others by out strategizing them. Not wanting to put in the work.
The Sabian Symbol for Mercury is Leo 6: AN OLD FASHIONED ‘CONSERVATIVE’ WOMAN IS CONFRONTED BY AN UP-TO-DATE GIRL
This Symbol speaks of being prepared to integrate the conservative and the new, the young and the old and the tried-and-true with the more innovative. You may find yourself faced with choices around these issues. Although both camps hold promise and reward, it is most likely that the best qualities of both are the proper compromise. Even though your habits may be ingrained, there comes a time when you are faced with issues from another perspective. If something or someone is “Confronting” you, remember that often what confronts or bothers us about others really shows issues that have to be examined about ourselves. Conservative inertia being challenged by the constantly changing. Learning to let one’s hair down. Issues of age and what one is capable of. Renovations. Ideas challenged.
The Caution: Denying the duality within oneself. Being afraid to get out there. Afraid of age or being usurped by younger, more vital energies. Envy, fear, jealousy.
The Sabian Symbol of Venus is Cancer 23: THE MEETING OF A STUDY GROUP OR LITERARY SOCIETY
This Symbol shows the gathering together of those of like mind in order to exchange or share ideas and information. In society, the search for meaning should always be made in order to enrich not only yourself but those around you. Finding the best way to describe something creates the opportunity for greater access by the collective. This can show websites, magazines, newspapers, books; any place that people gather together in order to give an objective view on what’s happening in the culture in order to gain a better understanding of what makes society tick.
Shared knowledge. Print media, newspapers, libraries, written word. Critics. Diaries, records and minutes of meetings. Talk back radio. Discussions. Letters to the editor. Social media.
The Caution: Falsifying of ideas. Propaganda spread by media. Intellectual smugness which excludes non-establishment thought. Chatting instead of doing. Being critical.
The Sabian Symbol for Mars is Taurus 20: WISPS OF CLOUDS, LIKE WINGS, ARE STREAMING ACROSS THE SKY
This Symbol implies a sense of moving forward quickly without feeling grounded or anchored to the realities of what’s going on around you. You may feel driven forward, almost out of your own control, but you run the risk of either going past things too quickly, or tiring as you try to resist. Let superficial excitements affect you and then be prepared to go back and sort out details later. This is a wonderful degree, but things may need to slow down and in order to take notice of what’s going on and not be so eager to escape. Fleeting opportunities or inspiration. Feeling things ‘in the wind’. Changes in the weather. Thinking on your feet. Going full tilt towards things in the future. Messages in clouds.
The Caution: Placing too much importance on the fast movement of the issue at hand. Wasting energy on nonessentials. Unstoppable progress. Destructive development.
The Sabian Symbol of Jupiter is Gemini 10: AN AIRPLANE DIVES TOWARD THE EARTH AS THOUGH FALLING
This situation implies an ability to be able to play with and defy gravity while maintaining a sense of being in control and able to pull out of difficult situations. Situations may seem to be heading for disaster, but perhaps you can still be in control, and, at the right moment, you’ll be able to pull out of the nosedive and save the day. The question is: do you really always have an adequate grip on the controls? Are you, or is someone else, actively working against people’s best interests? Imagine yourself regaining control – physical, mental, emotional or spiritually – and pull yourself out of the nose dive. You’ll become stronger and will enjoy the experience at the same time. Plunging into experiences without thought of ramifications. If you become conscious you may be protected (and saved) at the last moment. Daredevil stunts. Depression.
The Caution: Refusing help even though disaster is imminent. Free falls, defying gravity and the consequences. Shakeups. Neglect of physical realities. Crashing and burning.
The Sabian Symbol for Saturn presently stationary retrograde on Pisces 20: A TABLE SET FOR AN EVENING MEAL. We are seeing attacks on our food sources, also, some are choosing to forego heating and airconditioning in order to be able to afford food. Of course, those of us that are not struggling realise that some people definitely are at the moment. There’s also the question of who you would serve, along with ‘who would be invited to sit at your table’.
This Symbol shows the ability, or the need, to be able to provide sustenance for yourself and others, to “Set” the “Table” and have nourishment available for those who need it. It can show the knowledge of nutrition, cooking, catering all the way to knowing how to make money – how to ‘bring home the bacon’. At times in your life, you’ll prepare things for others to appreciate, to assimilate, to be nourished by and to enjoy. When everything is in place, you’ll want to have people around you to appreciate it. Patience is sometimes needed; having worked hard and long, you need to realize that your needs will be met. Returning home you can find comfort and sustenance. Attend to everyday tasks with reverence. Try to remember to say grace in thanks. Being nourished. Provision of life’s necessities. Issues of “who will serve and who will eat”. Dinner. Dinner parties. Baking and breaking bread. Nourishment. Table manners.
The Caution: Making preparations with no ability to complete or satisfy. Devouring things or people. Fast food. Eating standing up or on the run. Always having to do.
The Sabian Symbol of Uranus is Taurus 26: A SPANIARD SERENADING HIS SENORITA – with some things that we hear, are we to believe the spin?
This Symbol speaks of being able to use one’s voice, words, songs, poetry and culture to sway the minds and hearts of others. One can sway others to achieve a desire result. There is no guarantee of total success, but you must act if you want any chance of succeeding and you need to put your heart and soul into the performance. The worst that could be damaged is a little ego, so think positively and play your role with enthusiasm and passion. Music can lift the spirits and words of poetry and love can be healing. Shared feelings, love or passion may result. Being in tune with another. Soul mates or passing fancies? Having your voice heard. Knowing how to deliver a message in order to influence others to make decisions.
The Caution: Not believing messages being given. Insincere charades. Feelings of not being listened to. Spinning tales to get a response. Making things up to get a response.
The Sabian Symbol for Neptune stationary retrograde is Pisces 30: A MAJESTIC ROCK FORMATION RESEMBLING A FACE IS IDEALIZED BY A BOY WHO TAKES IT AS HIS IDEAL OF GREATNESS, AND AS HE GROWS UP, BEGINS TO LOOK LIKE IT
This Symbol shows the ability, or the need, to be able to envision or decide what you want to be and as you grow and develop, becoming that vision. The “Boy” of this Symbol lived in childhood under a hill figure of a president and when he grew up he became a president himself. At times in your life, you may find that you are growing into the image that you have imagined and it gives you a sense of pride – assuming you have chosen a positive image. What or who do you “Idealize”? What is it that you’d like to become? What image would you like to project? Meditating on a goal or the projection of an ideal can lead to actuality. Just be clear about what you really desire in the situation – you just might get it. Manifestation of ideals. Enduring truths. Culmination of efforts. Image consultants. Projections. Desiring a sense of immortality. Defining one’s fate. Conscious manifestation.
The Caution: Not being at all clear about who one is or can be. Being or becoming a screen for the projection of others’ ideals. Falling short of the mark. Shooting too far and achieving nothing.
The Sabian Symbol of retrograde Pluto is Aquarius 2: AN UNEXPECTED THUNDERSTORM.
This Symbol shows the ability, or the need, to be able to withstand “Storms” and things that whip up unexpectedly. It can show a personality that gets sudden flashes of inspiration, intuition or clairvoyance – those aha! moments. It can also show thoughts and emotions that erupt from out of nowhere. They can be brilliant or unstable (or both). You will likely find many times that you are suddenly tested or taken by surprise. Inner strength and stability are put to the test but you learn a lot from your experiences. The effect can be quite liberating, although there can be an initial shock. Thunderstorms clear the air after an extreme buildup of energy. There often is a sense of awe and wonder at the power of natural events. Sudden visitations of natural wonder. Breakthrough moments. A break in tension in the atmosphere. Thunder, lightning and electricity. The Tower card. Being a lightning rod.
The Caution: Losing control without warning. Emotional instability. Bottling up and then blowing up. Storms in a tea cup. Seizing up with fear. Loud bangs and crashes that stun.
It’s very worth mentioning that Pluto recently spent several weeks from the middle of April until almost the end of May on Aquarius 3. We are seeing talk of conscription and the reach for people to sign up for the military, not only in the U.S., but I’m also hearing it from other countries. So many are concerned about not only this, but the idea of war breaking out at any minute.
The Sabian Symbol of Pluto stationary retrograde recently (Pluto was on this degree for several weeks – a very powerful release of energies) is Aquarius 3: A DESERTER FROM THE NAVY STANDS SUDDENLY AWARE OF A DAWNING TRUTH: FREEDOM IS NEVER THE RESULT OF COMPROMISE
This Symbol shows the ability, or the need, to be able to listen to one’s conscience, to know when to do one’s duty, step up to the mark, or, when it’s time to leave, say enough is enough and ‘I’m not doing this anymore.’ You will find, at times in your life, that rigorous restraints and rules are no longer bearable. A decision to opt out may be a moral one or to maintain a free spirit. One shouldn’t have to “Compromise” themselves in order to be safe, secure, employed, or have a purpose in life. However, there are consequences for “Deserting” – not playing the game. Are you prepared for them? It can also show being taken away from home and family for reasons not of one’s choosing. Rebellion. Leaving although allegiance was pledged. Jumping ship. Wrestling with one’s conscience. Going AWOL. Packing up and leaving. Sudden realizations. Opting out.
The Caution: Not being prepared to play by the rules. Withdrawing when one should be involved in a physical, mental or emotional way. Refusal. Rats deserting the sinking ship.
The Sabian Symbol for the Moon’s north node is Aries 11: THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC, OR THE RULER OF ONE’S COUNTRY
This Symbol shows that it’s time to take charge, to expand your base of operations and to show that you have the integrity and the necessary energy to get things done. It’s also about bringing a sense of order and discipline into your life – physically, spiritually or emotionally. Find your sense of inner power and make it work for you so others don’t lord it over you. Be in control of your own destiny and individuality. Developing willpower. Receiving recognition. Discipline of thoughts, emotions and actions. Being in charge of your own life. The democratic process.
Keywords: Developing willpower. Inner power, discipline and integrity. Discipline of thoughts, emotions and actions. Leadership, power and ability along with their responsibilities. Accepting responsibility for one’s actions. “Calling the shots”. Rulers, presidents, leaders. Taking charge. The need for loyal subjects. Being voted in. The democratic process.
The Caution: Taking control. Lording it over everyone. Being overbearing. Not allowing others to be in charge of their own lives, health or situation. Egotistical and self-centered. Undermining others through a lack of self-awareness or confidence. Being larger than life. Dictators and tyrants. Military Governments
The Sabian Symbol of the Moon’s south node is Libra 11: A PROFESSOR PEERING OVER HIS GLASSES AT HIS STUDENTS
This Symbol speaks of the ability, or the necessity, of looking at people as humans and not through the lens of something one learned from books. It’s as though the aspects of the rational mind and the intuition require a different kind of focus. Seeing people for who they really are leads to better and kinder relationships, as does dropping judgmental opinions or relying on science or complicated codes of thought for answers. You may find the need to interrupt your rational concentration to realize your intuitive ideas. At times you may feel like the “Professor” and at other times “The Student”. Regardless, having the eyes to see each other in the true light of day is the goal. Different perceptions for different situations. Seeing that others get the message. Glasses and lenses. Observing others. Giving advice. Teachers. The ability to ‘read others’.
The Caution: Egoistic or superior positions that others have a lesser position or intelligence. Distortions of perception or observation. Condescending behavior. Bossy.
Chiron The Wounded Healer and The Stories We Tell Ourselves may be offering some help, so feeling of letting good luck and abundance in. Open your windows and doors, physically or metaphorically – open up and let the winds of needed change come in. As always, being greatful for the things that we do have makes room for more good things to come in.
The Sabian Symbol of Chiron is Aries 24: AN OPEN WINDOW AND A NET CURTAIN BLOWING INTO THE SHAPE OF A CORNUCOPIA
This Symbol shows that your mind is, or should be, open to possibilities that are being ‘blown’ in from the realm of spirit. There is an abundance coming, shown by the cornucopia, that will be self-sustaining. This degree suggests that with the slightest change in direction your fortunes could change as well. Look for out-of-the-ordinary opportunities and possibilities. Realizing that in one’s everyday life, one has it all.
Imagination. Keeping your options open. The promise of fruition. The breath of life filling you with inspiration. Open windows and doors. Fertility. Gain. Abundance.
The Caution: Relying on spiritual ideas to provide material sustenance. Thinking that good luck will just ‘blow in’. Shutting windows and doors – keeping light and life out.
It’s interesting to note that my last newsletter, on the Capricorn full Moon, had windows as the very beginning of the blog, and, at the very end. Opening your windows, blinds, curtains, doors, heart, etc. Letting those good breezes clear out the air. Perhaps a smudging is in order?
