July’s Leo new Moon occurs on July 28 in the U.S. and July 29 in Australia. This new Moon is quite a ‘fiery’ one as it’s in a fire sign and the only major aspect to it is a close trine to Jupiter in Aries. The Sabian Symbol for the new Moon is Leo 6: AN OLD FASHIONED CONSERVATIVE WOMAN IS CONFRONTED BY AN UP-TO-DATE GIRL, and, Jupiter is on Aries 9: A SEER GAZES INTENTLY INTO A CRYSTAL BALL BEFORE HIM. We are likely to be looking for ‘signs’ of where to from here – what new ideas, areas, territories, beliefs, possibilities, etc, are rising on the horizon? This aspect, by itself, can usher in a new optimism, new plans, feelings of expansion and growth, etc, and, it can be a fabulous time of dreams turning into reality.
With Jupiter now stationary retrograde, the trine aspect between the Sun and Jupiter becomes exact a few days after the new Moon right around the same time that Mars, the Moon’s north node and Uranus conjunct on Taurus 19: A NEW CONTINENT IS RISING OUT OF THE OCEAN. Many messages in this new Moon equate to taking on the ‘new’, while also most likely needing to confront the ‘old’, or, the outdated or what really needs to be let go of. Also, at the time of the new Moon, Mercury is on Leo 19: A HOUSEBOAT PARTY – exactly squaring the NEW CONTINENT of Mars, Uranus and the Moon’s north node. Just exactly where is this ‘new’ going to be moored and is everyone on board for the same destination? Some ideas are going to come roaring out seemingly out of nowhere while others have been brewing for some time (and may come as a surprise). Stand-offs are very likely with these energies.
This face-off (which can feel like a challenge of some sort) is made even stronger with Venus and Lilith conjunct in Cancer squaring Jupiter, which can have us feeling the struggle between what is established versus where we might want to stand up, protest, take on our rights, etc. The issues of such things as Roe Vs Wade, etc, can rear up, especially where the feminine feels repressed or dictated to or ignored in some way, and, especially where the law, rules and regulations and mores of ‘acceptable behaviour’ are concerned.
Chiron (The Stories That We Tell Ourselves) is on Aries 17: TWO PRIM SPINSTERS SITTING TOGETHER IN SILENCE. On some levels, we may feel as though our voices don’t matter or that we’re not being heard – or, we might be having issues with listening to others. In some instances, we may not feel the need to continue to try to get our point across, while in some others, we may feel that others do totally understand us from their own experience and not much needs to be said – it can show a quiet ‘knowing’ but it can also point to not wanting to communicate any longer.
With Saturn on Aquarius 24: A MAN TURNING HIS BACK ON HIS PASSIONS, we might find ourselves turning away from people, places or things that we would not have imagined ourselves abandoning or retreating from.
So, Jupiter’s message is about seeing into things, especially those things that others may miss. Jupiter is on Aries 9: A SEER GAZES INTENTLY INTO A CRYSTAL BALL IN FRONT OF THEM – what are the messages coming through to you now?

The Sabian Symbol for July’s Leo new Moon is Leo 6: AN OLD FASHIONED CONSERVATIVE WOMAN IS CONFRONTED BY AN UP-TO-DATE GIRL – the following is my full interpretation of this Symbol from my book The Sabian Oracle: 360 Degrees of Wisdom –
Commentary: ‘An Old Fashioned Conservative Woman is Confronted by an Up-to-Date Girl’. They have somehow been brought together by a situation or circumstance and are now face-to-face with each other. The ‘Old-Fashioned Conservative Woman’ may feel somehow ‘Confronted’ or challenged by the presence or the very existence of the ‘Up-to-Date Girl’. The ‘Girl’ may remind her of how she used to be, or how she always wanted to be. The ‘Up-to-Date Girl’ may be confronted by the ‘Conservative Woman’—she may have her own sense of inferiority, or even superiority, and many things may run through her mind as she sees herself reflected in the older woman. One of the scariest things to young people is the thought of aging. They like to believe they will remain young and bright forever.
Oracle: This Symbol often shows issues of the aging process being a positive experience, rather than the negative image people generally have of it. The ‘Old Fashioned Woman’ or the ‘Up-to-Date Girl’ do not have to stick to their stereotype; they can, indeed, bring the best of both worlds together. In fact, their roles may be reversed with the ‘Older’ woman being less ‘Conservative’ than the ‘Younger’ one. You may find yourself faced with a choice between tried and true established ways and the modern or innovative. It is most likely that the best qualities of both attitudes is the proper compromise. There may be a need to be mindful of other people’s mindsets and generational differences. However, you can’t please everyone all the time. Also, remember what bothers people about someone else is often a reflection of their own issues.
Keywords: Conservatism challenged by changing, energetic forms. Learning to let one’s hair down. Letting go and having a good time. Issues of age and what one’s capable of. Ideas challenged. Learning experiences. Renovations. Business takeovers. Different capabilities and talents. People acting or working together regardless of their differences. Generation gaps. Concentrating. Face to face meetings.
The Caution: Denying the duality within. Being afraid to get out there. Jealousy between people on different levels of being or different ages. Paying no attention to change/being afraid of it. Difficult combinations of people. Projection of the shadow. Standoffs. Criticism. Derision, envy, fear, jealousy. Age overriding feelings.
The Karmic Condition (the degree before) of this new Moon is Leo 5: ROCK FORMATIONS TOWERING OVER A DEEP CANYON
This Symbol shows situations that tend to be rock solid, steady and established. You may find that the natural structure of situations in your life are, on the one hand, carefully developed over time (there is a history here), but on the other hand, it’s right on the edge of a deep chasm. There seems to be no going back; forward is the only way out and the solution may be just to ‘jump into the void’. It may be a lonely journey, but you could find new depths of experience that others could only imagine. Still, situations may look unchanging and stuck with your back against the wall, but time may tell a different story. The choice: taking chances or standing still.
Keywords: Old structures and deep hazards. The choice: taking chances or standing still. Walking very close to the edge. Extreme sports. Risk taking. New takes on old situations. Additions to things long established. Masada. Mountains. Valleys and gorges. Fortifications. Isolation. The grandeur of nature. The forces of evolution. Rock. Geology. Layers of permanence. Landscapes. Canyons. Vertigo. No going back. Stability behind—the unknown in front. Great heights. Monuments. Doing a “Geronimo”.
The Caution: Painting oneself into a corner. Not being able to retrace one’s steps. Instability. Erosion. Jumping into the void without a safety net. Cracks appearing. Being right on the edge. Feeling like life is impossibly hard.
The Quest Degree (the degree following of this new Moon is Leo 7: THE WONDER OF THE CONSTELLATIONS OF STARS IN THE NIGHT SKY
This Symbol brings up issues to do with the bigger questions of life; these are likely to be on your mind. Even simple issues should be seen against the backdrop of something far greater and more meaningful than they at first appear. We on planet Earth can feel like a tiny speck when we consider how huge our solar system or the universe is, however, we each are an important part, we are all stars in our own right. Keeping this in mind helps to keep our lives in perspective. Questions such as “what is life really about” and “what does it all mean” are likely to come up for you.
Keywords: Reminders of the patterns, integration and enormity of nature. The big picture. Observing signatures. A determination to “be somebody”. The Stars and Stripes. Feeling like a tiny fleck against the backdrop of the vault of the sky. Space travel and its wonders. Signs from the heavens. Answers sought through astrology. Astronomy. Being a shining star. Enormous people or personalities.
The Caution: Ignoring down-to-earth issues. Missing the small details. Only being amazed by huge things and not seeing wonder in the small things in life. Being starstruck and not seeing the true picture.
Mercury is on Leo 19: A HOUSEBOAT PARTY CROWDED WITH REVELERS; THE WATER REFLECTS ITS LIGHTS
This Symbol shows the ability, or the necessity, of being flexible, movable and prepared to celebrate with friends in a carefree atmosphere. Although still in a situation of definite structure and form, things may need to be taken from the more mundane, normal routine and given over to fun and unusual possibilities. This pictures lightening up, relaxing and spending time with like-minded and pleasure seeking people. However, if you find you have nowhere to anchor, no boat landing to land on, you could find yourself rather unmoored and unsettled and continually on the move looking for fun that may be somewhat unfulfilling in the end.
Keywords: Emotive social pleasure. Joining with others in an adventurous spirit. Cleopatra-style parties. The issue of knowing where one’s going. Claustrophobia. Being cast adrift. Delicate social balances. Moored in water or on ground. Leisure times that are fun and free-floating. People getting ‘out of it’.
The Caution: Trapping people into ideals of pleasure. Self-indulgence. Not knowing “where” the party is going to be or finish up. Not being anchored in reality. Feeling “unmoored” and unable to disembark. Nowhere to permanently dock. Unknown destinations. Feeling trapped. Choppy seas. No one at the wheel. Springing a leak. Wanting to bail out. Tipping the boat.
Venus is on Cancer 13: A HAND, WHICH IS HELD OUT RECEPTIVELY, IS REMARKABLE FOR THE SUGGESTION OF CHARACTER IN ITS PROMINENT THUMB
This Symbol implies the rewards and the necessity of having a firm will and being willing and able to meet others with a strong handshake and a friendly attitude. Reaching out to others is shown here along with the need for being approachable and open to introductions to friends both old and new. Extending yourself to others can have many rewards, such as new friends, new opportunities, etc. Although a degree of flexibility exists it will inevitably be strength of character that succeeds.
Keywords: Openness and willingness to extend oneself to others. The handshake and the need for it. Being approachable and friendly. Palmistry and palm reading. Having a firm will. Introductions. Strong character. Flexible behavior. Hitchhiking.
The Caution: An aggressiveness and overbearing nature. Feeling that one is better, or stronger, than others. The smooth handshake that manipulates to impress one’s personality. Unbending and dominant behavior. Taking over situations regardless of what others want. Defensive, insecure, unsure, introverted. Blocking human exchanges.
Mars is on Taurus 16: AN OLD PERSON IS ATTEMPTING, WITH A DEGREE OF SUCCESS UNSUSPECTED BY THEM, TO REVEAL THE MYSTERIES TO A MOTLEY GROUP
This Symbol implies that one holds an understanding that is either ahead of the times or behind the times. Regardless of which it is, you may feel that no-one is paying attention to your advice or wisdom, but it is not your wisdom that is at fault, it may be your approach coupled with a lack of awareness of the listeners. Perhaps those you are trying to reach are not ready yet for the information or they instinctively already know it. However, often people are soaking up things without really showing how much they are ‘getting it’. Sometimes you teach better by example than by trying to persuade.
Keywords: The need to try a new approach. Challenging the status quo. Astrodrama. Being way ahead of one’s time. Getting one’s message across in an innovative and creative way. A teacher uniting diverse people in a common cause. Generation gaps. Wisdom given with expectation. Ideas bringing people together.
The Caution: Exaggerated opinion of one’s understanding of the situation. The mistaken belief that others need to know something. Not being in touch with the “times”. Feeling outdated. Preaching old, possibly outworn ideas. Insecure feelings based on conservative expectations of others.
Jupiter is stationary retrograde on Aries 9: A SEER GAZES INTENTLY INTO A CRYSTAL BALL IN FRONT OF THEM
This Symbol shows the ability to focus, take insights in, analyze meaning and to draw conclusions from available information. The whole picture is there in front of you, but you often need to interpret its meaning. With a little concentrated effort, you will be able to see things very clearly. There is the ability to observe things that others may miss. Try really tuning in and looking within for answers as you have the ability to see them with just a bit of focus.
Keywords: Flashes of inspiration. Tuning in and looking within for answers. Creative visualizations. Aura readings. Cutting through irrelevant messages. Looking carefully at structure. Seeking perfection. Clairvoyance. Illumination and deep insights. Looking ahead to see the signs.
The Caution: Confused by literal meanings. Not seeing the symbolic message. Always looking this way and that, not at the center. Getting lost in the big picture. Daydreaming and ignoring what’s really going on. Obsessing over what may happen. Needing to know what’s coming up. Being impatient.
Saturn is retrograde on Aquarius 24: A MAN TURNING HIS BACK ON HIS PASSIONS TEACHES DEEP WISDOM FROM HIS EXPERIENCE
This Symbol shows the ability, or the need, to be able to transcend difficulties and things that lure you off your path and then turning around and being an example to others for how they can live their lives. At times in your life, you may feel that you can no longer survive the roller-coaster ride of your emotions. It is by controlling your “Passions” that you will be able to find an objective position that allows you to understand your life and to move forward. You can benefit everyone by teaching the new wisdom and understanding that come after having gone through some hard life lessons.
Keywords: Conquering one’s base nature. Changing through maturing realizations. Learning lessons the hard way. Realizing it’s time to let go of things that once mattered. Being an example so others may learn. Reforming one’s ways. Dignity. Guidance. Turning around. Dropping the lower ego or society. Leading a monastic life. Showing what you’ve learnt.
The Caution: Giving up on emotional growth. Being dissatisfied with life. Being forced to perform for another’s benefit. Sticking to things that are no longer worthwhile. Stubborn refusal to move forward. Misguiding others. Severe reactions.
Uranus is on Taurus 19: A NEW CONTINENT IS RISING OUT OF THE OCEAN – this Symbol is highlighted a few days after the new Moon when Mars and the Moon’s north node conjunct on this degree.
This Symbol shows the rising of a new place, a new place to be, a new country or somewhere to be or to live. It implies that you can find that extra spark to create a brand new, original opportunity. This pictures the beginning of something that holds an enormous amount of potential for the future. There is much work to be done developing this into something fertile and productive. A whole new field of activity is coming to light. What you have done in the past has led you to this, but these new beginnings need to be met with a fresh sense of purpose and possibility.
Keywords: Enormous potentiality emerging. New trends and ways of being. Sudden eruptions of talent or fields of endeavor. The greenhouse effect. Global warming. Atlantis and other ancient underwater cities. Evolution. Patience. Developing slowly but surely. Emerging generations of people. New environments. Things feeling suddenly foreign. The birth of a nation. Migration. Land masses. Endeavouring to hold life together under the enormous pressure of the new.
The Caution: Continually seeking “new worlds” rather than finding a place in the existing one. No responsibility for the birth of the new. No respect for the old or established. Not shifting or evolving. Staying stuck in old realities.
Neptune is retrograde on Pisces 26: A NEW MOON REVEALS THAT IT’S TIME FOR PEOPLE TO GO AHEAD WITH THEIR DIFFERENT PROJECTS
This Symbol shows the ability, or the need, to be able to see, or to accept, when it’s time for people to move on or to part from each other. They need to “Go Ahead With Their Different Projects” – their focus has changed and, quite possibly, parted ways. There’s a picture here of new beginnings. People will have their own response to situations – everyone will not react in the same way. At times in your life, you’ll have this “New Moon”, and decide to go your separate ways. It can be a good idea to direct some energy into your desires or projects at the time of the new moon. Light a candle and state your intentions with honesty and love.
Keywords: Diversifying. Applying talents in a different direction. People splitting up and splitting off. New opportunities and potentials. The beginning of a new age. Letting go of the old and outworn. Separations. Embracing one’s future without the need for others. Coming to a fork in the road. Divorces. New jobs, directions and destinies. The dawning of a new era.
The Caution: Not giving, or receiving emotional support. Feeling split off and alone, even when one is with others. The fear and loathing of possible separation. Overthrowing the old too quickly. Changing direction unexpectedly. The fear of old age. Relationships that fail again and again.
Pluto is retrograde on Capricorn 28: A LARGE AVIARY
This Symbol shows the ability, or the need, to be able to take in a lot of information, to be social, yet have some time alone. The “Large Aviary” has a lot of citizens, all buzzing around, all interacting and full of life. There is a lot of chattering and flitting from one thing to another going on and while there is no harm being done, perhaps, sometimes, there’s nothing much really being achieved. Is this because there is a level of mental confusion happening? At the least there is likely to be a feeling of brotherhood and not being alone. Finding time alone can be difficult.
Keywords: Clairaudience. Hearing many inner voices. Having a huge entourage or crowd. Tinnitus. Enormous activity. Many people living their individual lives in one space. Blocks of flats and units. Housing estates. Birds, aviaries, bird seed. Perches. People chattering. Girls sharing. Lots to say. Little true content. Confined living spaces. Communicating solely with those in the immediate environment. Living in a world of one’s own with no thought of the realities of how other people live. Having to get along with others. Caged birds. Twitter.
The Caution: Mental confusion bringing a lack of discernment. Too much chatter with not much being achieved. False sense of freedom. Chattering more than doing. Finding it hard to find peace, harmony or privacy. Lonely existences. Abandoned living spaces. Dependence on external sources of nourishment or other provisions.
Chiron is retrograde on Aries 17: TWO PRIM SPINSTERS SITTING TOGETHER IN SILENCE
This Symbol shows that quiet withdrawal might be just what you need, but it is easy to become isolated in conservative, albeit moral, ideas. You may find that there is only a select, restricted group with whom you wish to associate. Be wary that this false sense of security doesn’t isolate you from change and growth. Unresolved issues can lead to stunted emotional responses. Look for opportunities to open up to new possibilities.
Keywords: The need to loosen up emotional blockages. The struggle to hold onto one’s original identity. Compromise because of social expectations. Meditations that communicate. Exclusive relationships. Relationships that have a quiet “knowing”. Dignified silence. Inner withdrawal. Communicating through body language.
The Caution: Emotional isolation. Refusing to accept relationship. Pretending to be someone that one is not. Disapproval of younger, more vital energies. Being fussy and judgmental. Chattering that is not conducive to growth or true relating. Gossip. Difficulty in communicating. Being shutoff, or shutdown. The loss of joy and spontaneity.
The Moon’s north node is on Taurus 20: WISPS OF CLOUDS, LIKE WINGS, ARE STREAMING ACROSS THE SKY
This Symbol implies a sense of moving forward quickly without feeling grounded or anchored to the realities of what’s going on around you. You may feel driven forward, almost out of your own control, but you run the risk of either going past things too quickly, or tiring as you try to resist. Let superficial excitements affect you and then be prepared to go back and sort out details later. This is a wonderful degree, but you may need to slow down and take notice of what’s going on and not be so eager to escape.
Keywords: Fleeting opportunities or inspiration. Feeling things “in the wind”. Seeking a change in the weather. Thinking on your feet. Doing things at a fast pace. Placing too much importance on the fast movement of the issue at hand. Wasting energy on nonessentials. Things floating in the air. Going at full tilt. Skywriting. Vapor trails. Things, here one minute—gone the next. Messages read from clouds. Planes. The beauty of the sky.
The Caution: Resistance to the creative flow. Superficial excitement. Unstoppable progress. Destructive development. Forces beyond your control. Making unformed or uninformed decisions on a whim. Not thinking things through. Impatience. Continual impermanence. Lack of rest or sleep. Contrails. Weather control. Overcast skies.
The Moon’s south node is on Scorpio 20: A WOMAN DRAWING ASIDE TWO DARK CURTAINS THAT CLOSED THE ENTRANCE TO A SACRED PATHWAY
This Symbol shows the ability or the need to be able to draw aside confusions or obstructions that impede your path or stop you from realizing where you could be or go. You, either alone or with others, may feel the need to venture down new “Pathways” or investigate new possibilities, but you will have to muster faith and overcome fear to enter these new realms, these “Sacred” places. You will require both courage and inquisitive desire. It is clear that your sphere of operation and action will become vastly enlarged with the new perspective that opens for you.
Keywords: Mysteries revealed, sometimes after a long wait. Feminine mysteries laid out before you. Woman’s reproductive organs, especially the vagina. The mysteries of the Goddesses. Getting past things that are cloaked or shielded from entry or view. Sexual mysteries. Open Sesame. Clairvoyant readings that reveal the ‘Path’. Invitations to the unknown. Drawing aside inhibitions. Following through on things. Undressing.
The Caution: Being seduced into dark and sinister things or being led astray. Not being shown the true picture or the truth. Frigidity and closing off sexual responses. Being, or feeling, shut out. Dark rooms with little sign of life.
