The new Moon in Taurus occurs on April 22. It is conjunct Uranus, the planet of surprises, breakthroughs, disruptions and the unexpected. We certainly are living in interesting times where we don’t know what is going to come next. This new Moon is very much about us as individuals, as unique people with our own unique individual requirements, needs and aspirations. We are in the midst of a very strange, and, rather alienating, time. We really must be careful of being afraid of others, we can be careful, but, if we let fear overtake us, we can find ourselves very alone. Of course, some, including myself, are OK with social isolation for a time, but, for an extended time, it’s going to be very challenging for many. I have heard that legal offices are being flooded with people filling out their wills. No doubt, there will be a record number of separations and divorces from this time, also, babies being conceived :)
Further, with Jupiter and Pluto conjunct in Capricorn, we can feel a sense of being hemmed in (for good, of course, but, in some cases, unreasonable reasons), controlled and told what to do. For many, it is a good thing to protect from this virus, however, people are running up against the governmental authorities and large fines are being handed out, adding to the fear that’s going on as so many are now unemployed, or, not bringing in any (or much at all), money. Such difficult times. But, if we follow the rules, look out for ourselves and our loved ones, all should be OK.
Something very noteworthy is Venus going retrograde next month on May 22. It goes retrograde on Gemini 22: DANCING COUPLES CROWD THE BARN IN A HARVEST FESTIVAL. I’m hoping that we’ll be able to embrace each other and dance by then, but, my sense is that we won’t be able to. It’s not only about the hugs and kisses and handshakes, the issue is also about the supply of good, services, supplies and food. Venus is slowing down, and, she is going over some very interesting degrees in the coming weeks. It is noteworthy that Gemini has more ‘going on strike’ degrees than any other sign, and, Venus will be going over five or so of those Sabian Symbols that talk about going on strike, protesting for better conditions, wanting to be rewarded for work put in, and, in some cases, walking away from the past entirely for a new life. At this new Moon, Venus is on one of Gemini’s ‘striking’ degrees… see the Venus entry below for more details.
Saturn, the planet of structure, rigidity, authority, and, our boundaries, the things that work for us (or not) in amongst the rules and regulations of society, is square this new Moon. This is adding to the sense of ‘having to do’, having to obey, wall-up, let go of some relationships for a time, feeling suspended, unsure and not in control. Saturn is surely bringing up some very difficult truths for many, and, for some, this can be a wonderful time of realising their habits, beliefs, addictions, behaviours, etc, and, we can find ourselves ‘growing up’ in some measure. This can be great, but, there can also be the pain of cancelled plans, walls between you and your objectives, etc. This is surely a time of acceptance until things begin to move forward.

The new Moon is on Taurus 4: THE POT OF GOLD AT THE END OF THE RAINBOW
Commentary: ‘The Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow’ is a wonderful image. ‘Rainbows’ are said to be a bridge to the Divine. They inspire awe as we gaze at their beauty and the sheer wonder of nature. They can represent boundless promise, and there is said to be a reward, a ‘Pot of Gold’, to be found at its end. In folklore, elves, leprechauns and fairies are associated with ‘The Pot of Gold’.
Oracle: The quest to find our ‘Pot of Gold’ is very tempting but it can be forever elusive because it appears to move as we move or as we change our perspective. However, we all have our dreams and with a little concentrated effort we can reach our own version of the ‘Pot of Gold’. It can imply riches and rewards on many levels, sometimes beyond our wildest dreams. There may be a need to reflect on just what exactly these “riches” are. The promise of the ‘Pot of Gold’ entices us, but this can also be the cause of problems if we forget other more important things in life. Some people want material or spiritual riches without putting in any hard work. This way of thinking may lead one astray. Although some people can earn their way through life on a wing and a prayer, most have to put in a true effort to succeed. Often it is not the finding of the elusive ‘Pot of Gold’ at the ‘Rainbow’s End’ that is the real reward, but the rewards found during the search and the wonder the ‘Rainbow’ creates as it links heaven and earth. Perhaps there is a constant search for rewards without recognizing the riches that are already at hand. In this situation, many rewards can come from creative and spiritual efforts – just be a little wary of expecting too much. Picture a ‘Rainbow’ in your mind, see ‘The Pot of Gold’; and hold it in your memory bank – this will sustain you and may indeed lead you to your reward.
Keywords: The promise of riches, in whatever forms these may take. Creative imagination. Goals and ambitions. Alchemy. Splashes of color. Rewards contained. The search for the treasure. Seeking communion with nature and life’s bounty. Wealth derived from changing perspective. Talent and beauty. Fantasies. Illusions vs. reality. Fairylands.
The Caution: Seeking easy, tempting solutions. Thinking that rewards are always just “over the horizon”. Thinking that one is never going to get near “it”. Elusive success. Forgetting the more immediate things in life. Seeking perfection. Castles in the air. Pipe dreams. Fool’s paradise.
The Karmic Condition (the degree before) is Taurus 3: NATURAL STEPS UP TO A LAWN BLOOMING WITH CLOVER
The clover blossoms kiss her feet, She is so sweet, she is so sweet. While I, who may not kiss her hand, Bless all the wild flowers in the land. Oscar Leighton
This Symbol often shows comfort, luxury, riches, beauty and the good things in life. It implies that a time of fulfilment is close by, but there often is still some small effort to be made in that one has to take the simple steps towards inviting wonderful things into your life. Keep going the way you are, following your natural intuition, and you will find the peace you have in sight. Just be aware not to become complacent or lazy as doing nothing and not putting any effort in could lead to great possibilities slipping away. Hopefulness. Inspirational possibilities. Gradually enlarging one’s vision. Harmony. Abundance. Nourishment. Being barefoot. Small efforts leading to large returns.
The Caution: Looking for the easy way out. Not making the effort to find what is just a few steps away. Being lazy when one should be going for the objective. Temporary success. Expecting everything to be laid out before you. Weeds. Unkempt lawns. Neglected land.
The Quest Degree (the degree following) is Taurus 5: A YOUTHFUL WIDOW, FRESH AND SOUL-CLEANSED FROM GRIEF, KNEELS AT AN OPEN GRAVE TO RECEIVE THE SECRET OF ETERNAL LIFE – Uranus has just spent nearly three weeks on this degree, and, it also spent quite a few months on it in 2019.
If you’re still hanging onto a dead dream of yesterday, laying flowers on its grave by the hour, you cannot be planting the seeds for a dream to grow today. Joyce Chapman
This Symbol speaks of things from the past that sometimes block progress in the present or for the future. Don’t let loss beckon you to give up and throw everything away. There must always be a time to grieve, but what is lost is lost and cannot be regained by losing yourself. Know when it’s time to fill in the grave and let go, whether it’s literally letting go of people who have passed away or have disappeared from your life, in order to move on. Gather up your energies and move towards new objectives letting go of the old. Letting go of relationships and things. Purging the past. Gradual realization of the illusion of matter. The passage of grief. Redundancies. The gifts that loss and separation can bring.
The Caution: Wasting time staring at lost opportunities. Grudges and bad feelings that last much longer than needed. Staring at issues of loss and death. War and its horrors. The feeling that one has no future. People or events that just won’t leave one’s memory. Hanging on for fear of the future. Empty legacies.
Uranus is conjunct this new Moon on Taurus 7: THE WOMAN OF SAMARIA COMES TO DRAW WATER FROM JACOB’S WELL – this Symbol can (of course, it doesn’t always) speak of racial prejudice, and, ‘being from the country, nation, ethnicity’, etc. We are seeing a fair amount of that with the worries with this virus – Asians being attacked, etc. There can be a feeling of not being welcomed, not feeling like one belongs, feeling like an outsider, etc.
We need to feel the cheer and inspiration of meeting each other; we need to gain the courage and fresh life that comes from the mingling of congenial souls, of those working for the same ends. Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin
This Symbol shows the depth of human emotions, along with the notion of giving and sharing. The breaking down of barriers and cultural issues that divide people is the issue here. The Woman of Samaria was taken by surprise that Jesus would speak to her as she was said to be from the ‘wrong tribe’. This speaks of accepting others for who they are, regardless of social structures and limitations. Someone may be in need of help, draw on your inner resources, take time out to assist and reach out to others. Dipping into family ancestry. Past lives. Going below the surface. Water and its blessings. Finding renewed self-respect. Digging deep to find what unites, not divides.
The Caution: Allowing social prejudice to rule decisions about oneself and others. Unacceptable behavior based on social conditioning. Feeling that one is from the “wrong tribe” and can’t assimilate or contribute. Issues of being acceptable, worthy or a “local”. Water disputes.
Mercury is on Aries 21: A BOXER IS ENTERING THE RING – this could bring about arguments and fights. There are increased reports of split ups, divorces and domestic violence. There may be more protests (which the Venus degree also speaks about), but, the real issue can be the desire to get back into life, and, perhaps, to take on bigger and better projects.
He that wrestles with us strengthens our nerves, and sharpens our skill. Our antagonist is our helper. Edmund Burke
This Symbol shows that there may be a temptation to take on issues, even to fight, but it needs to be with dignity and regulation. You may feel a need, or the urge, to step up to the plate and take something or someone on. There are rules to follow and often others will be end up being the judge of the final outcome. Make sure you possess the skills and training to defend what you believe. Remember that sometimes you need to back off if you’re not winning a contest. Question: are you more on the attack or on the defence? Physical or psychological self-assertion and determination. Fighting for one’s emotional, psychological or physical space. Being a contender. Entering the ring or the arena.
The Caution: Using force or power to dominate people or those who challenge. Acting in a combative manner. Not displaying sportsmanship. Wanting to knock people out. Looking for combat. Throwing punches at anything. Belting, smacking, invading. Being punch-drunk.
The Quest Degree for Mercury is Aries 22: THE GATE OPENS TO THE GARDEN OF ALL FULFILLED DESIRES – always notice when this degree is around as it can be a very beautiful Symbol of finding one’s desires, for wanting to be out in the garden with the blooms, for nourishing, watering and fertilising what you have.
This Symbol brings up fabulous opportunities and possibilities. You could find yourself in beautiful places with your desires met. There can be the promise of happiness; stability and feeling like you’ve arrived where you want to be. At times, though, you may be right at the point of what you want, but perhaps you need to make the deliberate action of opening the gate; admitting to your self what you want and where you want to be. Perhaps you need to knock, showing your intention of wanting in. Maybe you already have everything you need – look around. Craving for happiness. Gardens. Pathways to joy. Rewards and treasures. Domestic bliss. Passages to a better life. Acquiring property. Realizing luck and wealth. Utopia.
The Caution: Feeling or being shut out. Denying yourself the right to just rewards. Wild ‘goose-chases’. Being afraid of losing everything. Having everything, but wanting more. Things not being as real as you imagined. Feeling unhinged. Not having the materials to make dreams come true. Issues of possession that separate. Your cup being half-empty or half-full.
Venus is on Gemini 16: A WOMAN ACTIVIST ON A PLATFORM, IN AN EMOTIONAL SPEECH, DRAMATIZING HER CAUSE – this is very likely to bring about protests and social unrest, at least in some measure. The ‘WOMAN’ probably has a lot to say, otherwise she wouldn’t be on her soapbox. Venus is beginning to move more and more slowly as it reaches it’s retrograde on May 13.
A sufficient measure of civilization is the influence of good women. Ralph Waldo Emerson
This Symbol shows the need to be able to voice one’s needs, frustrations, emotions or demands without fear of being reprimanded. You may feel misunderstood and disadvantaged simply because of who you are or the position you hold. Even when you stand up for what you feel, you may strike resistance, partly due to others’ ignorance. You must press your case or the status quo will remain. If the cause is just and your communications are clear, you will be heard by those who understand or resonate with what you are saying and your influence will spread. Stating one’s case. Revealing social passions. Being a mouthpiece for personal or social causes. Wanting people to listen and care. Taking it to the streets. Having a platform.
The Caution: Pressing opinions on the unwilling and disinterested. Feeling that no one listens or cares. Rational or political structures overriding one’s life. Going over the top trying to get a message across. Feeling like the “woman”who is never listened to. Controlling the agenda. Hormonal swings. Male chauvinism blocking female progress. Justifying ones self. Silly ideas.
Mars is on Aquarius 17: A WATCHDOG STANDING GUARD, PROTECTING HIS MASTER AND HIS POSSESSIONS – this feels like a major theme at the moment. People are more and more afraid of other people. Here in Australia, the government is suggesting that people report others if they are having a gathering of more than two people, or, doing something that goes against the new rules. Many are getting fined enormous sums for stepping out of line. The issue of this virus is dividing people, making them very afraid, just in general filling them full of fear. Many have lost their jobs. A very difficult time.
CERBERUS, n. The watch-dog of Hades, whose duty it was to guard the entrance—against whom or what does not clearly appear; everybody, sooner or later, had to go there, and nobody wanted to carry off the entrance. Ambrose Bierce
This shows “Protecting” one’s people or boundaries, to be a “Watchdog Standing Guard”. This can be a tiring responsibility, but one that has you feeling you belong and contribute to the safety and well being of your loved ones, or perhaps those you work for. If not handled well, you may feel unsafe at times, needing to be alert to signs of trouble. This can be a good thing, but it can lead to paranoid behaviour where you can’t relax. Enlisting the support of trusted and loyal supporters may help, but you probably also need some self assurance. Watch out for false feelings of intrusion or betrayal. Guardianship. Things that protect. Being alert to invasion or trouble. Learning to relax. Locks. Alarm and security systems. Dogs. Constantly checking up. Sudden responses.
The Caution: Suspicion and paranoia that rob the joy of ownership. Being unable to let down one’s guard because of the possibility of invasion or attack. Feelings of being exposed. Possible betrayal. Greed. Envy. Lust for power. Having others do “the dirty work”. Stool pigeons. Spying. Stooges. Being the fall guy. Worrying endlessly about loss. Resenting intrusion. Jealousy.
The Karmic Condition of Mars is Aquarius 16: A BIG-BUSINESSMAN AT HIS DESK – a lot of people are having to work out their financial situations as they’ve lost employment or whatever. There’s also the enormous bailouts for big business that we will no doubt witness – banks, airlines and whatever, will receive enormous payouts. Also, individuals will be getting a stimulus cheque, although that won’t be nearly enough for most people to keep them out of financial issues.
A billion here and a billion there and pretty soon you’re talking big money. Everett M. Dirksen-US politician
I hate being a grown-up. Having to learn things I don’t want to know really pisses me off. Overheard, quoted by Barbara Sher
This shows organizing things, running a business, attending to paperwork or generally being very much in charge. A “Big-Businessman” is someone who isn’t afraid to make decisions, take calculated risks, or work often and long for the rewards it brings. It is a fairly big job to organize a business or group and keeping tabs on all that’s going. Being professional and organized brings rewards. However, it can mean putting limits on your personal life. This can result in alienation – particularly if you have to stay behind or say no to outings. Are you living the way that is best for your future, your relationships and physical well being? Decision making. Management. Being in charge and in control. Calling the shots. Being responsible. Delegating. Economic rationalism. Sorting paperwork. Desks, computers.
The Caution: Taking advantage. Bossing others. Shoving people around. Getting depressed about work. Always being “on the job”. Talking about money and business constantly. Greediness. Exploiting people and events for personal gain. Having difficulty retiring. The removal of the “little people”. Not doing the paperwork. Brushes with the law.
The Quest Degree of Mars is Aquarius 18: A PERSON BEING UNMASKED AT A MASQUERADE
Who are you going to believe, me or your own eyes? Groucho Marx
This shows being able to see through others; to be able to “Unmask” people, to reveal one’s self or hide away when it’s needed. It seems that someone is having their mask stripped away; they’re no longer able to “Masquerade”, they are revealing themselves, who they are and possibly their intentions. Secret motives may have a purpose at the time they are concealed, but they almost invariably become known. You may find that you, or someone else, finds themselves in this situation. Difficulties and embarrassment that can arise, but staying true is the important thing. There may be a need to look after your reputation. Secret motives exposed. Having to face one’s self. Judgement about true worth. Gaining true insight into someone. Wearing a mask that suits situations. The joy of surprise.
The Caution: Detrimentally revealing yourself too quickly or too early. Being found out to be a fraud. Finding answers that aren’t welcome. Layers of deception discovered. Charades, pretence and ploys to manipulate. Lies. Assumed identities.
Jupiter is on Capricorn 27: A MOUNTAIN PILGRIMAGE – Jupiter and Pluto are currently conjunct, which can bring about power plays, issues with rules, regulations and authorities. The whole issue of ‘authority’, ours and others, can come up.
First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is. Zen Aphorism
This Symbol shows being able to climb high, to rise to occasions, perform well, have a mission and, probably most importantly, to embark on spiritual journeys. Many people travel, but more often than not it implies a spiritual striving; an ascent in consciousness and the ability to transcend earthier, more immediate matters. There is always the desire, or the need, to strive further, to learn more on the path to understanding and transcendence. You may want to follow those that have gone before to achieve a true sense of inner fulfilment. Work towards your own ‘mountain top’. The effort may be great, but so are the rewards. Ascent in consciousness. Setting off on a mission. Spiritual, material, corporate or political striving. Rarefied atmospheres. Spiritual journeys. Striving for the highest office.
The Caution: High moral stands with no depth of feeling. Feeling “high above” others. Feelings of being, or acting like, an ascended being. Haughtiness. Intellectual snobbery. People scrambling for the top. The “tall poppy” syndrome. Ambitions that know no bounds. People ridiculing others for their lesser position. Spiritual or corporate struggling for position.
Saturn is on Aquarius 2: AN UNEXPECTED THUNDERSTORM – Saturn goes retrograde on this degree around May 11, so, we may be in store for some more ‘lightning strikes’ and ‘shocks’.
Lightning is the shorthand of a storm, and tells of chaos. Eric Mackay
This Symbol shows the need to withstand “Storms” and things that whip up unexpectedly. It can show sudden flashes of inspiration, intuition or – those aha! moments. It can be thoughts and emotions that erupt from out of nowhere. They can be brilliant or unstable (or both). You will likely find that you are suddenly tested or taken by surprise. Inner strength and stability are put to the test but you learn a lot from your experiences. The effect can be quite liberating, although there can be an initial shock. Thunderstorms clear the air after an extreme buildup of energy. There can be a sense of awe and wonder at the power of natural events. Sudden visitations of natural wonder. Breakthrough moments. A break in tension in the atmosphere. Thunder, lightning and electricity. The Tower card. Being a lightning rod.
The Caution: Losing control without warning. Emotional instability. A “back draft” of emotions. Bottling up and blowing up. Confused by sudden outbursts. Loud bangs and crashes that shock and stun. Seizing up with fear. Sudden unleashing of emotions. Hurricanes of messy energy.
Neptune is on Pisces 20: A TABLE SET FOR AN EVENING MEAL – it’s curious how people have been stocking up on supplies, and, there are likely to be food shortages if the lockdowns continue. Certainly, there is way more eating at home going on. Also, this Symbol can speak about money earned – wages and budgets for shopping, having one’s needs met, etc.
Sometimes you struggle so hard to feed your family one way, you forget to feed them the other way, with spiritual nourishment. Every body needs that. James Brown
This shows providing sustenance for yourself and others; to “Set” the “Table” and have nourishment available for those who need it. It can show knowledge of nutrition, cooking, catering all the way to knowing how to make money – how to ‘bring home the bacon’. There’s a need to prepare things, to appreciate, assimilate, be nourished by and enjoy. When everything is in place, you’ll want to have people around you to appreciate it. Patience is sometimes needed; having worked hard and long, you need to realize that your needs will be met. Returning home you can find comfort and sustenance. Attend to everyday tasks with reverence. Try to remember to say grace in thanks. Being nourished. Provision of life’s necessities. Issues of “who will serve and who will eat”. Dinner. Dinner parties. Baking and breaking bread. Nourishment. Table manners.
The Caution: Making preparations with no ability to nourish or satisfy. Devouring things or people. Banging on the table and asking for more. Guilt around issues of providing. Feasts or famines. Eating syndromes. Empty spaces at the table. Arguing at meal times. Indigestion and heartburn. People not turning up for dinner. Overindulging. Consuming people. Not appreciating life’s bounty. Continually having to provide for others. Always having to come up with what’s for dinner.
Pluto is on Capricorn 25: AN ORIENTAL RUG DEALER IN A STORE FILLED WITH PRECIOUS ORNAMENTAL RUGS – this can speak of making deals, valuing things (or, devaluing them).
Make sure you don’t start seeing yourself through the eyes of those who don’t value you. Anonymous
This Symbol speaks of knowing how to appraise the worth of things, to be able to buy and sell and market products for sale. Taking pride in the
products of your culture, and the buying and selling of useful and beautiful things is a responsible position, and the claims made about the products have to be tried and true. There may be a feeling of needing to reassess your attitudes and ideals, particularly if there’s the desire to get the better of others. You may feel the need to work with the physical and mental practices of oriental traditions that are available. Refinement of cultural understanding and values. Bargains. Bartering. Selling and trading. Charging a fair price. The sales pitch. Products of the east. Stalls. Markets.
The Caution: Bargaining only to personal advantage. Giving undue significance to unworthy goods. The archetypal “car salesman”. Talking to others merely to gain advantage. Not appreciating the value of one’s goods.
The Moon’s north node is on Cancer 1: ON A SHIP THE SAILORS LOWER AN OLD FLAG AND RAISE A NEW ONE – this is quite the transit as the nodes sit on the Cardinal Points (Aries 1, Cancer 1, Libra 1 and Capricorn 1 are the Cardinal Points). The first degrees of a Cardinal sign are important power points where things get going. They pack a punch, in other words, of energy and forward movement.
Times change and we change with them. Anon
This Symbol implies a time of dropping the old whilst adopting the new. To ‘Lower an Old Flag and Raise a New One’ marks real turning points in one’s life. Something is changing, possibly dramatically, and the transformation should be taken seriously. Something that once was useful or valuable is, or has, ended and something brand new is beginning or emerging. There should be a symbolic gesture or expression of this change of allegiance. It may help to run any new ideas or plans up the “flagpole” to see if anybody salutes. You’re could change countries, professions, relationships, etc, as these are very significant times. Changing loyalties. Turning points in obligations or duties. Announcing new standards. Letting go of old allegiances and taking up new ones. Divorces, marriages, shifts.
The Caution: Rejecting the old just for the sake of change. Fickleness. Not sticking with one thing for long enough to realize the rewards of loyalty. Being a traitor. Religious quarreling. Going only where the “good action” is. Piracy. Mutiny. Treason. Abandoning former priorities.
The Moon’s south node is on Capricorn 1: AN INDIAN CHIEF CLAIMS RECOGNITION AND POWER FROM THE ASSEMBLED TRIBE – the south node on this Symbol seems to be asking us to stand up, to take the initiative, to make some changes in our lives… to claim (or reclaim) or sense of personal authority.
If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. John Quincy Adams
This shows the necessity or the ability to be strong, stand tall, be in charge and command respect. There are leadership issues that need to be embraced or addressed. Sometimes we need to rise to the occasion and take charge and this may lead to a struggle for control; you may have to remind those around you that you can be trusted to make decisions or lead others. Those above you may remind you of your lesser position in the scheme of things – are some jealous of your achievements and power? Know when to give way to the rights of others. Assuming authority. Finding a sense of place. Charisma. Respect. Standing up in the crowd. Staking one’s claim. Being voted in. Popularity contests. Benevolence.
The Caution: Power tripping and struggles. Over-inflated views of one’s self. The continual need to quieten power battles. Being challenged by those left and right. Demanding attention and that others follow orders. Taking over. Selfish and ego-driven. Too many chiefs.
