Breaking Down And Breaking Through: January 2017 Cancer Full Moon
Astrology of this Lunar Cycle
Occurring on Thursday the 12th January (at 11:33 am GMT), this first full Moon of the year is a very powerful one. Falling in Cancer, it is in a very tight grand-cross with Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto, making it an interesting, stimulating and potentially stressful time and one that is likely to have many people wondering what the heck is going on. And, in amongst it, we might find it hard to make sense of it all, and we might feel like throwing our hands in the air and turning off the TV (and doing both, probably, at the same time 🙂 ).
The tightest aspect to this full Moon is the square from Jupiter – it is almost exact. Jupiter’s mission, in amongst other things, seems to be the desire to find equanimity, to seek the truth, to have a sense of respect and authenticity, along with fairness and balance. The Sabian Symbol for Jupiter shows that in amongst it all, what we are really experiencing is a lot of noise, distraction and obscuring (or distortion) of the facts. Jupiter is on a degree that often speaks about ‘sounding off’, and, some are, no doubt, wanting to have their voices, ideas or responses heard.
Uranus is also in a tight aspect, and, with Jupiter, it forms a rather tight and compelling grand cross with this full Moon. This can bring about quite a bit of tension, especially if we want to hang onto a sense of safety and security (the full Moon is in Cancer, with the Sun in Capricorn, after all). We may feel a deep sense of unease if we’re not going with the flow and allowing our days to unfold. Shocks, whether disappointing or delightful, are bound to happen, and we might be taken off-guard at times. Breakthroughs in understanding will come if we align with our true purpose – our true goals.
Jupiter and Uranus are opposing each other – Jupiter in Libra and Uranus in Aries can bring up issues to do with ‘us versus them’, or, ‘my political, philosophical, religious or ethic viewpoints are bigger, better, more true than yours’. Of course, there are good things that this aspect can bring up, including the need for freedom of thought and movement, the desire to break free of restrictions, the feeling of wanting to (or, having to) leave the past behind, to move on to a new chapter in your life. No doubt, some people will be saying goodbye to some friendships, relationships, jobs, homes – all kinds of situations can be challenged if they do not measure up to what is needed to move into a new way of being.
Adding to the mix is Saturn in Sagittarius in a tight sextile aspect with Jupiter, and, in a trine with Uranus. Saturn is bringing us opportunities to get more organised, more straight, more determined, or, more focused than we might have previously been. Saturn, though, often demands his ‘pound of flesh’, and, in this instance, it is asking that we make sure that we have done the work; that we have put in the effort necessary to get where we want to go or do what we want to do. With concentration, we can achieve much with Saturn’s grace. The stumbling block may be that Saturn is in a quincunx aspect (I see the quincunx as The Itch That Is Hard To Scratch) with the full Moon. So, we may need to put aside sentimental or emotional attachments to outcomes, and, go with the things that are more practical, more pragmatic and more grounded. Saturn often rewards such actions.

Coloring the full Moon is Venus and Neptune conjunct (together) in Pisces. This aspect is almost exact, with Venus passing over Neptune immediately after the time of the full Moon. This can have us either idealizing, dreaming and wearing rose-colored glasses, OR, it can have us romanticizing about things in a way that can be surreal, misleading or deceptive. This aspect can bring love and beauty into your life. The trick is to have your heart open, but not to be taken advantage of; to be caring, giving and receptive, but not leaving yourself vulnerable to those who might not see things the same way. If you’re sacrificing your wants and needs, putting aside the things you need to be doing for yourself, or, avoiding the clues that are coming through your intuition or the thoughts that pop into your mind, you may find that, when the full Moon has passed, what you thought was a nice dream was more of an illusion. So, the trick here is to be discerning, listening for what is really going on. Venus and Neptune together, especially in Pisces, can be wonderful, you just have to pay attention to clues, subtle and not-so-subtle. Addictive behaviors can lead one astray, too.
Close by to the Venus/Neptune conjunction is the Moon’s south node. This aspect is waning now, but, there may still be a need to examine what is worth keeping and what is best jettisoned = let go of. Any emotional, physical or mental dross or garbage is likely to pull you back into situations, relationships or mind-sets that will keep you from moving forward into the new promises shown by the Jupiter/Uranus opposition, which colors most of 2017.
Pluto is also in the mix, too, and, we are challenged to find our inner power and authentic sense of personal authority… we can sense that this is really strongly about going forward into a new year while letting go of the old.
We also have Chiron and Saturn in square aspect to each other. This, again, brings up the rewards of letting go of ‘old stories’. We are definitely entering new, and, potentially unknown territory. Less baggage will equal more freedom, more self-respect and more mobility, which is something that many are surely seeking now, especially as we are going into a 1 Universal Year. Old hurts, pains and afflictions may come up for a new appraisal now. We have the opportunity to see things with fresh eyes.
In a few days following this full Moon, Mars will be closing in on a conjunction with Chiron and squaring Saturn. This can have us feeling as though we are coming up against brick walls, and, it can bring up frustration and disappointment if we are butting heads with others. These ‘walls’ can be disagreements, people being short or nasty with each other, perhaps people revealing their true colors. Again, letting go of the things you can’t change helps, as does realizing your boundaries and remembering to center yourself if things get out of whack.
The message of this full Moon seems to be that no matter what happens, it’s by maintaining your balance and your faith in yourself and others that you can find a true sense of direction in what surely promises to be a very interesting time unfolding.
Working With The Lunar Energies
The full Moon each month marks a time of heightened energies and events. It often marks the culmination of the energies released at the new Moon. Emotions can be supercharged as the Sun and Moon are on opposite sides of the zodiac and illumination is increased – it’s like we can see in the dark – and we can be hyper-aware as well as being hyper-awake. The effects of a full Moon can be major or minor, depending on how they interact with your own chart. Sometimes, realizations or events that are unleashed, or unlocked, can stretch their meaning months into the future. A lot can be learned at the time of the full Moon and whether it’s lunacy or illumination, or a combination of both, there’s magic unleashed.

The full Moon is on Cancer 23: THE MEETING OF A STUDY GROUP OR LITERARY SOCIETY – this Symbol speaks about ideas, thoughts, opinions, etc, and the sharing of them. It can point to all forms of media, but, particularly to populist media with the promotion of ideas and beliefs that are sometimes authentic, sometimes not. Discerning whether something is real or ‘fake’ can be a trick, especially with the full Moon on this degree…
Commentary: ‘A Study Group’ or a ‘Literary Society’ pictures people coming together to share opinions and ideas. The ‘Society’ can symbolize any situation where people get together to discuss and share their thoughts; from a board or committee meeting to a gathering of people with common goals or interests. Finding the best way to analyze, direct or describe something creates better understanding for others.

Diaries, records and minutes of meetings. Newspapers and news media. Consulting with learned people. Talk-back radio. Sharing beliefs and ideas. The mirrors of society. Discussions. Letters to the editor. The meeting of the minds. Reviews.

The Sun is on Capricorn 23: A SOLDIER RECEIVING TWO AWARDS FOR BRAVERY IN COMBAT – sometimes we, or others around us, need a pat on the back for a job well done.
This Symbol shows being able to receive praise, awards or rewards when they are due. We often need to be acknowledged for the issues or causes we’ve fought for and the battles we’ve endured. True deeds of valor and bravery should be rewarded. Whether you are rewarded, respected or recognized, for the good things you’ve done or not, you’ll know that you’ve done them. You will find that your efforts will, at some time, be recognized and some appreciation, payment or compensation will be offered. You may also be the one who needs to recognize others’ achievements. Subsequent awards are often greater than the first because the dangers are well understood.
Keywords: Desperate striving for recognition. Rewards for involvement in tough situations. Medals and trophies. Tributes, acknowledgments and benefits given or showered. Award ceremonies. Posthumous awards. Giving thanks. Compensation. Insurance and legal claims. Recompense for taking action.
The Caution: ‘Awards’ as band-aids for the purposes of assuaging the guilt of the populace so often produced in war. Desperate for recognition. Rejection lines. Bribery.
The Sun symbolizes: One’s core center, spirit, heart, issues to do with father, men, self, ego, your male side. How you radiate your sense of being. What others see, how you are recognized or remembered, sense of identity and connection with male energy – yours and others.
Mercury is on Sagittarius 30: THE POPE BLESSING THE FAITHFUL – do you feel blessed? Are you someone who can bless someone else with your attention, thoughts, presence? Do you feel that someone needs to do this for you? Is the ‘Blessing’ only going to those who share the same viewpoint, the same beliefs?
This Symbol shows being present, on-board and ‘there’ for people when they need it. The “Pope” instills hope and a sense of wonder; he is said to be a representative of God on earth. Blessings come from worshiping a higher power with people of like mind. This shows that people will dispense rewards upon those who are eager to receive from them. This often shows a spokesperson that will be heard by everyone. Show respect and reverence to others, as this will lead to rewards of their own. This can show someone having a powerful memory; they remember the faces and names of people and often have a powerful presence and charisma.

Venus is on Pisces 10: AN AVIATOR IN THE CLOUDS – Venus here is on the degree that Neptune has been on for months and months. Venus may be calling on us to rise above situations, to know when to be present and when to escape…
This shows being able to stay on course, not allowing distractions or difficult or confusing issues to deter you from your destination. Perhaps you need to rise above and transcend the more nitty-gritty realities of earthly existence and its difficulties, just be aware that you may not be seeing the complete picture very clearly sometimes. If you take special notice, you may be able to see through illusions, seeing past the surface appearances to things that others miss. You may be able to rely on your spiritual, creative or intellectual skills to take you above and beyond those things that others have to deal with. However, you may also be evading the real truth.
Keywords: Elevated views. Always seeing the best in people and things. Peace and tranquility. The longing for transcendence. Not seeing limitations. Being in a refined “head space”. Mastery. Flight, planes, pilots. Avoidance of time constraints. Pollyanna attitudes. Free flights of fantasy and escapism. The need for accurate navigation. Being in charge of the controls. Seeking higher truths. Maps. Compasses. Global satellite positioning. Clouds. Mist and fog. Hang-gliding. Don’t “over-control” like a novice pilot. Stay loose enough from the flow that you can observe it, modify, and improve it. Donald Rumsfeld
The Caution: Escaping responsibilities. Isolating oneself. Drugs and alcohol abuse. Avoiding reality. Unearthed. Unrealistic expectations. Missing the point. Evasive.
Venus symbolizes: Relatedness, cooperation, what attracts you. The experience of sweetness, beauty or delight. Social interactions, love, friends, how you reach out to people. Feminine persona, relationship with mother and females. Money, possessions, sense of values.
Mars is on Pisces 19: A MASTER INSTRUCTING THEIR DISCIPLE – Mars on the ‘teacher and the pupil degree’ can have us railing against being told what to do, how to behave, and, we may be challenged to see through people or situations to see what the core truths really are…
This shows the ability, or the need, to be a student, a “Disciple”, or a teacher, a “Master”. At times you’ll find yourself being either one or the other. You may be the teacher or the pupil, but remember that it is often the teacher that learns and the pupil that teaches. This shows taking time for the transfer of higher knowledge and wisdom. It’s also a sign to listen to your own higher wisdom. Someone with something worthwhile to say will usually find someone eager to listen. When you have a need to learn something, it seems that the “Master” will always appear.
Keywords: To give and to receive. Lessons that need to be well learnt. The transfer of knowledge. Taking time to instruct others. Being willing to both teach and learn. Step-by-step lessons. Jupiter is on Libra 23: CHANTICLEER’S VOICE HERALDS THE RISING SUN WITH ENTHUSIASTIC TONES – this Symbol can be a wonderful rouser of the spirit, or, it can be noisy and annoying. Jupiter here can go either way – the trick is to respond to what is true for you and to hear the call to action in a way that suits you and your ideology. Relationships of all kinds are in high focus with Jupiter in Libra. And, with Jupiter opposing Uranus, we may feel that each new day brings another step forward, another clue to what’s going on…
This Symbol shows enthusiasm, joy, confidence and the desire to greet each day with the anticipation of new opportunities. It is true that each day begins the same – the Sun comes up, the world is still spinning – but what the day will bring always holds a bit of a mystery. This is a joyous Symbol of greeting and heralding the day, but there can be a blurring of the concept of whether the “Chanticleer” (the rooster), causes or simply heralds the new day. You may be blessed with the voice to speak of new developments, to make announcements and wake everyone up to the realities of life. Don’t make too much of a noise while doing it and you’ll rouse people around you to action.
Keywords: Anticipating new opportunities. Waking early. Being a morning person. Having a clear, beautiful or loud voice. Speaking up when it’s needed. Heralding the new age. The Caution: Overstating your role, talents or abilities. Being noisy and disturbing others. Sounding off. Being loud and irritating. Taking the glory and none of the responsibility.
Jupiter symbolizes: The big picture, expansion, exploration, aspirations, religious and philosophical ideals, issues to do with traveling, foreign lands, people and traditions, culture, education, generosity, luck, abundance, support, optimism. Insight through knowledge and wisdom.
Saturn is on Sagittarius 23: A GROUP OF IMMIGRANTS FULFILLING THE REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTERING A NEW COUNTRY – whether you are a migrant, a refugee, or, someone wanting to enter into a new way of life, a new way of being, a new place to live, there may be a need to measure up in some fashion…
This Symbol shows finding a new way of life, a new country or nationality, or new place to live and raise a family. It shows the possibility and hope for better things and a new way of life. Whether you are an “Immigrant” or someone looking to move onto new territory, you need to be prepared to venture out into new adventures for the promise that’s offered. Once you’ve “Fulfilled the Requirements”, you can move into this brand new life and reap the rewards. There may need to be adjustments about the way one communicates one’s thoughts and ideas – be receptive to this new way of life and you’ll learn much. Reorientation of self. Learning new languages or customs. Passing tests (or not). Asylum. Immigration. The Statue of Liberty. Papers. Qualifications. Refugees. Laws. Borders.

Saturn symbolizes: Authority, rules, discipline and obligation The heavy stuff. What we fear, loss, karma, aging, the establishment, orthodoxy, tradition, status, the concept of time, walls, boundaries, limits, older people, restrictions, patience, conquering difficulties.
Uranus is on Aries 21: A BOXER IS ENTERING THE RING – is it time to step up to the plate in order to step through the gate to the things you want? The trick with Uranus here is that people can be argumentative and want to take each other on. What and where is the place that you’re striving for? Are you going after what you want in ‘the right way?’
This Symbol shows that there may be a temptation to take on issues, even to fight, but it needs to be with dignity and regulation. You may feel a need, or the urge, to step up to the plate and take something or someone on. There are rules to follow and often others will be end up being the judge of the final outcome. Make sure you possess the skills and training to defend what you believe. Remember that sometimes you need to back off if you’re not winning a contest. Question: is someone on the attack or the defense?
Keywords: Physical or psychological self – assertion and determination. Attack or defense? Fighting for emotional, psychological or physical space. Being seen as a person of strength. Throwing punches. Fighting on any level. Being prepared to take a swing at someone or something. Stepping up to the plate. Throwing down the gauntlet. Going after the title. Big vs. small egos.
The Caution: Using power to dominate people or those who challenge you. Wanting to knock people out. Storming in and taking over. Looking for combat. Being combative.
Uranus symbolizes: The unexpected, things that are individual or ‘different’. Charged, energetic dynamics, electricity, light, lightning bolts, sudden changes, those who live on the fringe of society. Sudden turns and twists of fate. Rebellion, surprises, liberation, freedom.
Neptune is on Pisces 11: PEOPLE TRAVELING A NARROW PATH, SEEKING ILLUMINATION – staying true and staying on our path can bring rewards as we head towards the light. It’s best to imagine that that is not a train coming directly at you – you are on your own individual journey, even if you are traveling with others…
This shows having a quest, “Seeking Illumination”, having a “Path” and staying on it regardless of what life throws at you. Sometimes the search for high ideals and understanding places us at odds with the more conservative social expectations of others. It is the ability to persevere with the search, regardless of the cost, that marks the sincerity of any path or journey. You may, at times, have to go without some comforts or stick to a rigorous agenda. Most times this quest is very illuminating, sometimes it’s confusing. You will need to reject that which is unworthy, while staying true to your objectives in order to stay focused on the goal.
Keywords: People “on the Path”. Sticking to one mindset, diet, regimen or habit. Having a cause to follow. Not looking sideways. Awakening one’s base senses in order to progress. Physical ecstasy. Being in the now. Going towards the light. Staying true to self. The promise of light at the end of the journey.
The Caution: Being blinded by the light. Not knowing where you’re going. Denial of physical pleasure. Puritanical and one-eyed. Distractions. Narrow minded. Disillusionment.
Neptune symbolizes: Mystical, “out there,” spirituality and con artists. Dreams, mysteries, mystics and religious issues. Intuition, clairvoyance, seeing into the invisible. Addictive, chaotic, charming, deceptive, illusory, co dependent, sensory awareness.
Pluto is on Capricorn 18: THE UNION JACK FLIES FROM A NEW BRITISH WARSHIP – this is a powerful degree for Pluto to be on. It was on this degree last year when the Brexit vote in the United Kingdom was held. This Symbol can speak about posturing, war, and, claiming territories, whether they belong to whoever is claiming them or not…
This Symbol talks about supervision, border protection and control. There can be a feeling of
having to oversee a large ‘empire’ where reliability and leadership are vital. This can be a tiring responsibility, but there can be an awareness of the protection of ‘all who went before’. However, political and social restraints from the past could be causing you to feel that you’ve somehow got to ‘wage war’. Issues to do with the government can come up, whether you agree with what they do or not. You may be confronted with having to make your presence felt and guard your territory. Effective supervision will help you to relax.
Keywords: Colonialism. Protectionism. The government, big business and the media. Class-consciousness. Power and political displays. Displays of “law and order”. Border patrols and protection. Strength and might. Nationalism. Royalty. The ruling elite. Supervision. The armed forces. Patrols. Pitting people against each other. Empires. Victory bringing riches. The mother country. The struggle against decline. Flags. Imperialism. The Commonwealth. The rule of law.
The Caution: Artificial shows of strength. Being armed. Strong-arm tactics. Flags. Republics. Issues of statehood. Getting out the big guns. Rebellion. Social disintegration.
Pluto symbolizes: Unconscious motivations, depth psychology, history. Sex, procreation at a deep level, intensity, profound emotions, taking hold of one’s power. Being king or queen of one’s underworld. Strength, survival mode instincts. Big money. Big power. The Plutocracy. Power vs power struggles.
Chiron is on Pisces 22: A PROPHET BRINGING DOWN THE NEW LAW FROM THE MOUNTAIN – Chiron has already transited over this degree… we are covering old ground here, but, there are ‘New Laws’ being instigated. Whether you like what’s being laid down is going to be very interesting – sometimes you’ll be grateful and sometimes you won’t like them.
This shows being able to live life by a set of “New Laws”, or, to make a new set of laws that better suits your life and place in the scheme of things. This pictures revelations of spirit and truth. It is important to manifest these truths and laws and to integrate them into your everyday life. Codifying the ways of humankind can help us understand the limitations of our earthly existence. Although our basic principles may stay the same, the specifics will vary in order to accommodate the changing perceptions. You may find new laws to live by, or, you could be the one to bring these ‘rules’ to others.
Keywords: Revelations and channeling of new information. Truths being revealed. Thoughts, ideas, guidelines. The Ten Commandments. Laying down the law. New resolutions. New pathways of living. Social justice messages. The Koran. The Torah. The Bible. Finding records. People of the book. The Ark of the Covenant. Newly codified laws. Amendments. The Testaments. Avatars and guides. Moses. Mt. Sinai. Legislation. Laws enacted. Legislation.
The Caution: Being told what to do. Believing one has all the answers OR believing someone else. Rigid application of dogmatic laws. Bureaucracy. Laws set in stone.
Chiron symbolizes: Our wounds, Chiron is known as The Wounded Healer. The wounds are The Stories That We Tell Ourselves, it is where we have to focus on healing, it can show things that are out of shape or misplaced or in need of repair.
The Moon’s North Node is on Virgo 4: BLACK AND WHITE CHILDREN PLAYING HAPPILY TOGETHER – the objective of the Moon’s north node on this Symbol is clear; it’s to find those things that unite us instead of concentrating on those things that divide us…
This Symbol shows the integration of people of different races, religions, economic status or places. You may find people from different or seemingly disparate or separate areas coming into your life, making it richer, more rewarding and interesting. Prejudice of any kind, whether religious or race based, economic or class systems, is an illusion based on social perception and excludes people that could add to our lives. Social perceptions can color how we see others and these need to be put aside. Rather, it’s about embracing brotherhood and caring. The integration, acceptance and enjoyment of all people brings depth and meaning to life.
Keywords: Universal brotherhood. Overcoming prejudices and boundaries that separate people. Knocking down social barriers to relate freely. Being able to let go, relax and have fun with people from anywhere. Adopted siblings. Foster homes. Affirmative action. Trust and joy. Play that unites people.
The Caution: Acting with morality that is swayed by public opinion. Not being able to adjust psychologically to situations that require creative responses. Racial prejudice.
The Moon’s North Node symbolizes: This is known as quite a ‘karmic point’ (although all planets and points in a chart can be ‘karmic’). One’s destiny in this life. The things you are meant to integrate, move towards, become. Destined relationships and relationship issues can show up here.
The Moon’s South Node is on Pisces 4: HEAVY CAR TRAFFIC LINKING TWO SEASIDE RESORTS – this is a fascinating degree. It can bring about a lot of running around, running back and forth, driving or catching transport. It can also be about running around in your mind, we don’t have to necessarily go anywhere to feel the effects of this degree.
This shows moving about, getting from destination to destination in a free flowing manner. Driving or flying or in a bus; there’s lots of activity going on. There’s also a need for space sharing, patience and give-and-take as people have their own needs. This can show communications and linkages between separate worlds leading to increased pleasure, OR, frustration, confusion or psychic indigestion and the need for a holiday. There’s a lot going on and confusion can set in if one doesn’t follow the rules to ensure a smooth flow of operations. Being ‘squeezed-in’ can bring a sense of panic but it can also bring pleasurable interchange between people and a chance to tune out.
Keywords: Going with the flow. Running back and forth. Having to move continually. Pollution and car exhaust. Rush hour and road-rage. Plans for arrivals and departures. Public holidays. Traffic jams. Traffic banking up. Having trouble making left hand turns. Detours. Packing and unpacking. Luggage. Travel itineraries. Impasses. Nervous systems. Urine therapy. Constant phone calls. Switchboard jams. Heat and smog.
The Caution: Distrust of connecting elements. Creating barriers. Constant traffic. No real human interchange. Road rage. Traffic works. No time for leisure. Accidents. No escape.
The Moon’s South Node symbolizes: Past karmic patterns to be overcome, can be habits that are good, but can describe things, relationships, issues that you need to let go of, or, hold you back from manifesting your true destiny. Relationships that feel karmic and difficult, memories from the past.
